A few days ago @cjhubbs shared that he had been introduced to Bukahara, a four-piece German folk pop band with eclectic influences. Since then, I've been really enjoying their music.

Suggested Songs: Happy, Same Kind of People, Afraid No More, Border, Grotta Delle Ninfe.

cjhubbs,

@adam Yay! Glad you’re enjoying them!

Turned off the Stanford/Colorado football game last night at halftime with Colorado up 29-0 and seemingly running away with it. Woke up this morning to find out that Stanford came back and won the game in OT. Can’t help but feel a little bit of schadenfreude at Colorado’s humbling after all the hoopla following their early wins.

Just sent an email to my four active users: I'm going to be shutting down iowadon.org next month. It's always just been me as admin; it was fun as an experiment but for the 5 of us that use it regularly it's more than I can justify from a time standpoint. I'll migrate my account to somewhere else when the time comes.

Decided it was time to try upgrading Iowadon to the latest Mastodon release. Seems like I'm stuck just trying to install the new version of ruby. It just... hangs. Nothing in the install log. Checking for ruby... then nada. For an hour. sigh

In Praise of Humble, Gentle Men

This morning a headline came across my social media feed, with a link to a remarkable interview with actor Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for playing Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons. In this interview with NPR reporter Rachel Martin, Stewart describes his time playing Picard with strong religious tones. When Martin noted that many…

Roasting a leg of lamb (first time!) and I don't have a wireless thermometer, but what I do have is a good old fashioned probe thermometer and an extra smart camera to point at it.

Jank that saves $$$ isn't jank at all.

cjhubbs,

@dandb You are truly a MacGyver for the internet age.

@dandb Don’t forget the chewing gum wrapper!

Made it to the last day of the conference, which means I finally get to present my paper. Barcelona has been lovely, but NGL I’m looking forward to heading home tomorrow.

Look, this is ridiculous that Republicans would try to enact something like this. But it's so clearly unconstitutional that even a Trump-appointed judge would be hard pressed to enforce it.

Warrantless search, prior restraint of speech, restriction from consulting counsel? I'm just an engineer with a layman's interest in con law and I could present an argument to get this thrown out.

All the presenters so far wt this conference going long. I’m worried about not going long enough! Guess I have a day yet to practice.

We've started only subscribing to one streaming service at a time in our house; a month of Netflix, a month of Hulu, a month of Max, etc., cancelling all other services during that month.

I kinda wonder if this will become common enough that these services start offering weekly or daily pricing.

cjhubbs,

@collinsworth It feels like a short step from that to just paying on demand per stream. I assume transactional friction would slow that progression at some point.

You get the feeling from reading them that we might be loved

This old concert recording of Rich Mullins at a Wheaton College chapel service in 1997 is an internet classic, but listening through it again today I was struck by his wisdom about the love of God: I am at an academic place so I need to speak highly of serious stuff. Although I have trouble with serious stuff, I have to admit, because I just think life's too short to get too heavy about everything.

Double-vax afternoon: flu shot in one arm, new COVID booster in the other. If I’m traveling internationally in a week, might as well be well-boosted. And if I’m gonna feel lousy the next day from some shots, that day might as well be Friday!

Auto-loading Bluesky posts in the web app using Chrome and an Auto Click extension

So, I want to use Bluesky web version on my PC, but I want it in a single column that auto-loads new posts the way Tweetdeck (RIP) used to. Here's how I'm accomplishing that: Chromeless Window This gets rid of all the buttons and address bar and stuff in the Chrome window. Create a new shortcut, fill in these two fields accordingly:

Are the ESPN announcers getting a bonus for every time they say “Coach Prime”? This is kinda ridiculous.

cjhubbs, to Colorado

Refs are losing control of this Colorado-Colorado State game and it’s only the first quarter. It feels like it could get ugly. The coaches and the media have been stoking the fires all week.

started the #2 QB tonight and he hasn’t been flashy but he is a big improvement in that he isn’t turning the ball over. Amazing how much easier it is to lead a game when you’re not handing it to your opponents once per quarter.

Invited neighbors over to hang out and watch the Iowa football game.

Halfway through the first quarter: lightning delay. 😩

Time to get the food out, I guess.

Two years ago when I agreed to serve on our public library's board of trustees, I did not anticipate our library director's retirement so soon. Now we are in the midst of hiring a new director. Turns out it's a decent amount of work! Happy that we have three good applicants to interview for the job. Looking forward to getting a new director in place.

AT&T's iPhone upgrade program really is trash. Repayment over 36 months? Yuck.

T-Mobile's is better, but it would require me to switch providers and T-Mobile has a coverage gap in at least one key location for me.

At this point, I might just purchase my phone outright so I'm not shackled to a particular provider for 2-3 years.

What are you doing?

cjhubbs,

@adam Just finished paying off my iPhone 13 and I'm probably gonna keep it another year or two.

In my rewatch of #GreysAnatomy, season 10 is a real low point for the series.

You can see them rearranging the board for Yang's departure and Shepherd's soft departure.

I really don't like the Kepner/Avery relationship. In fact I don't like any relationship in this season. It felt like the writers were just shuffling everyone around without any purpose while they tried to figure out what the show would be without Sandra Oh.

cjhubbs,

@dandb Some of those shows look pretty creepy in retrospect. I remember watching Bones where they had the (female) boss of the lab in a relationship with one of the (male) interns... not icky at all, right?

@jcrabapple I used Harry's for a while several years ago. Eventually ended up with way more on hand than I needed. Used it up. Switched to a safety razor.
