Type 1 diabetes is “oh fuck, the place we thought was open for lunch is closed until 4 so … shit.”

And also

“But I just shot up with insulin so, margaritas and fries?”

I mean worse things have happened.

Oh no. Have fallen into the trap of an album I still really love.

It's a good album in any event, but Duncan Sheik's eponymous debut album is firmly settled in a couple of points in my timeline where I listened to it constantly, and it brings me back to some of myself.

chucklessmith,
@chucklessmith@mstdn.social avatar

@grrrr_shark It is a very captures-a-point-or-mood-in-time kinda record, innit?

What's it called when the lyrics mimic the melody? There's a word for this. Cohen did it in “Hallelujah” -- “It goes like this, the fourth the fifth, the minor fall the major lift" -- the chords are literally the 4 / 5 / 6m as he says them. What in the hell is that called?

chucklessmith, to random
@chucklessmith@mstdn.social avatar

“Cowboys are frequently, secretly fond of each other” is a hell of an example as shit that I wrote about in my thesis (with respect to adverbial ordering and how that gets reconciled in Minimalist Theory syntax, you know the X’ type).

Going to have to consult Ernst and Cinque on this matter.

@qurlyjoe @GayDeceiver Eats shoots and leaves! Lynne Truss!

chucklessmith,
@chucklessmith@mstdn.social avatar

@qurlyjoe @GayDeceiver There's a thing called a "garden path" sentence, which is like (and this is stupid but it is the canonical example) "The horse raced past the barn fell.”

Where the linear semantics of the utterance makes sense right up until the very last moment and then the whole thing falls apart because of the last word / phrase. They're really fun and happen all the time in the waves hands actual world.

chucklessmith,
@chucklessmith@mstdn.social avatar

@qurlyjoe @GayDeceiver Vonnegut also wrote a tender little bit about how the semicolon (;) is a hermaphrodtie transvestite ... well hell, let me get it. shuffles about No, I can't find it. But the important part there is that it's important you never meet your heroes. And if you do, and they've said some dumb shit that's wrong, be prepared to kick them in the pussy.

So Alabama is executing someone today using nitrogen asphyxia. This has never been done before, and they seem to have no idea what the experience will be like, but have ruled that it does not amount to "cruel and unusual"

chucklessmith,
@chucklessmith@mstdn.social avatar

@grrrr_shark @mloxton It's truly spectacular how much heavy lifting they're willing to allow the conjunction to do in this case. Without question, it's “unusual”, but they're just gonna let it slide because “cruel and" is mixed in there, and I guess we can't know a priori if this is in fact cruel, so you crazy kids just go ahead and have a good time.

The New York Times covered the American Dialect Society’s word-of-the-year vote and miraculously included the winner—“enshittification”—in its unexpurgated form. | cc @pluralistic (Gift link) https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/15/crosswords/linguistics-word-of-the-year.html?unlocked_article_code=1.N00.wDo9.AZPARUsRKWKl&smid=url-share

@Fritinancy @pluralistic The ADS WotY election each year is by far the best, most reliable pop-ling moment of the LSA Annual Meeting. Also a fun respite from the goings-on elsewhere over the weekend. I am glad it has not become enshittified.

“If I were ever” — that’s the subjunctive, no? I mean it’s a subjunctive within a conditional but still. Yeah? Mood, man. All this time we piss and moan about tense and aspect, and then mood elbows its fucking way in. (I am a tense and aspect man, in case we’re looking for hot dates.)

Related: Somewhere around here, I do have aircheck of my radio show mentioning the DVD re-release of Airplane! and hinting that might be a good Christmas gift for me. And my family came through! I did indeed get the Anniversary Edition DVD, which came with a coupon you could fill out and mail in with some sort of postage, and receive for yourself your own inflatable Otto Pilot.

Fucking yes, I sent in that coupon. I never did get my inflatable Otto Pilot. That last part makes me sad, but 🤷‍♂️

I will admit, when I saw Steve Scalise introducing Mike Johnson after Johnson won the Speaker vote, I did immediately ask myself “Now who the hell is that Stephen Colbert lookin' SOB in the background?”

Answer: Uh, That's Mike Johnson!

I really enjoyed this, precisely because it's one of my favourite songs, even if it's super-80s and a bit cheesy.

The complexity is what makes it good - it really works. (And I somehow feel redeemed in liking it for that, because I am a loser ;)

@grrrr_shark This is excellent. Somewhere I did read an intensive data study thing on key changes in general (particularly at, e.g., the final chorus of a pop song) and so so many songs in the past have done that, but in the last like 2-3 decades, it's almost entirely absent from hit pop music. Will see if I can locate that somewhere. But yeah, that song is wild; like it goes maybe eight bars at a stretch max before oops! Including right in the middle of the chorus. Pretty rad :D

I wrote Hue to voice my displeasure about its cloud service becoming mandatory for my home smart lights.

They replied it was to "advance security".

I replied: The most secure option is for my data to never leave the devices in my home. Duplicating my data to your servers and enabling your servers to remotely control devices my home inherently is less secure.

They politely told me to fuck off.

I will remove all Hue lights when I remodel.

@Jeremiah Will be fun to see what the Pi-Hole does in response. Also this makes me wonder — guess there is a Hue bulb or two somewhere in my (vast very big Bay Area apartment haha) ecosystem. Why the hell do I even have the bridge plugged in?? It may be just for the lone color-changing bulb? LOL

chucklessmith,
