@catalystcoop@mastodon.energy

Catalyst is an all-remote data engineering, analysis and software development consultancy. We empower advocates, policymakers, and researchers working on the #EnergyTransition by publishing #OpenData and #OpenSource software related to the US energy system. We also work with mission-aligned clients on both open & proprietary projects.

We're organized as a worker cooperative.

Hello @mekkaokereke or anybody else familiar with working with folks overseas in #Nigeria is there a clearly preferred way to make international payments there? Domestically we use Gusto but their international fees seem vague at best. It looks like @opencollective would let us use PayPal or Wise. Are there any labor or employment law issues to watch out for if the person doesn't have their own legal entity we can contract with? Is it hard to set up an LLC there?

On the potential for green H2 cost reductions through experience:

"electrolyzers account for only around one third of the cost of green hydrogen. The rest is driven either by the cost of green electricity – already far down its own experience curve – or by the cost of heavy engineering components – stuff like compressors, tanks, valves, pipes, power supplies and site infrastructure, which are not about to fall off a cliff."

If you need a dose of nerdy optimism about what the grid could look like if we do the #EnergyTransition well, this Volts pod with Lorenzo Kristov was really great.

It also highlights a widespread deficiency in many capacity expansion models: they don’t typically accommodate community-scale distributed resources that are in front of the meter.

We're hiring a technical writer familiar with Python, Sphinx, @readthedocs
and hopefully also energy systems to help improve our #OpenData docs. It's contract work and the writer doesn't need to be in the US. Please share & boost!

@pyOpenSci Hmm, that shortlink doesn't appear to be active, and adding http(s) doesn't seem to fix it.

We want to apply to the Google Season of Docs for but have never worked with an outside technical writer before. Does anybody have someone to recommend? It's a project focused on producing open data describing the US energy system.

Sadly and with little warning, the @opencollective Foundation has decided to dissolve, stranding 600 collectives currently using it as their fiscal sponsor and in some cases, employer of record.

Statement from Open Collective Inc -- the platform developer, which originally set up OCF as a (apparently very!) independent org was caught unawares:

This tutorial from @gvwilson is great. "SQL for data scientists in 100 queries" builds up complexity adding something new in every query. From "SELECT * FROM table" to partitioned window functions and much more.

@gvwilson Even just a thoughtful, progressive set of examples like this is hugely valuable.

One query we've tried (and failed) to create a few times is the value of a weighted percentile given a column of values and a column of weights.

E.g. given a table of coal deliveries including the tons delivered, and the mean heat content per ton for that delivery, what's the value of the 95th percentile of coal heat content per ton across all deliveries?

If you're a student doing research in energy systems, we're working on a grant that would let us support you in developing open data wrangling & software development skills. Would you be willing to spend <10min filling out this survey to help us better understand your needs? Survey closes Friday, Feb 2nd.

A thread from @GaelVaroquaux looking at the impact of the community-driven sklearn compared to centralized corporate ML packages. Community isn't always fast or easy, but it can be very robust over the long term once it's established.

This new skrub library from @GaelVaroquaux & other folks behind @sklearn looks like it could be very useful for our work. It focuses on systematizing messy data prep, which we've had to do a lot of in applying ML for entity matching between agencies. E.g. linking plant and utility IDs between FERC, EPA, EIA so the different data they report can be used in tandem:

Th leaked tax credit rules from the US Treasury look goood. Let's hope people don't flip out and try to get them changed before they're finalized.

With the $3/kg credit, new renewables running electrolyzers already pencil financially even without a grid connection, so stuff is going to get built even with these additionality, hourly matching, and deliverability requirements.

We're planning to do a bunch of outreach in 2024 in the community of people working with open data and open source energy system models (hopefully with support from NSF POSE and maybe Sloan) and it seems adjacent to the kind of work being done by @pyOpenSci & @leahawasser

Do y'all think this would be a good potential community partnership?

We made a post in their Discourse here:
https://pyopensci.discourse.group/t/engaging-the-open-energy-modeling-data-community/401

catalystcoop,
@catalystcoop@mastodon.energy avatar

Also, while all of our own work is done in , we're moving to a model of distributing data products rather than a sprawling data processing pipeline application (it'll stay open source if you want to see it or contribute, but most users don't need or want to see how the open data sausage is made!).

So to find a wider set of potential end users maybe it would also make sense to talk to the folks at @rOpenSci and @us_rse

Hey #EnergyMastodon, we finally got set up here so I guess we should do an #introduction

Catalyst is an all-remote worker #Cooperative focused on open #DataEngineering, analysis, and open source software. We mostly work with public US data related to the energy system, pulling together information from #FERC, #EIA, #EPA, and other agencies and trying to turn it into analysis-ready database tables so advocates, policymakers, & researchers can focus on their own novel work instead.
