So, today is a national holiday in . Anniversary of our first constitution, 1791. That never really worked, because… and this may be interesting for readers in other countries.

For hundreds of years Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was quite democratic state, for the time and place at least. Our kings were elected by popular vote (that is, by all nobility. More than 10% of society at the time, much more that typical elsewhere), the candidates had to present their programs beforehand, swear by it before coronation, and were held responsible before Parliament. The lower house of Parlament consisted of delegates chosen by popular (same note as before) vote in their lands, and were bound by voters' instructions; that is, they could deviate from them, if needed, but then had to explain the decision back home. Upper house was crewed by high-level state and church officials, no hereditary seats. To ensure that nobody's rights were denied, nor voice silenced, there was institution of veto, that had to be taken back by the one who stated it – after the settlement was reached.

Oh, and speaking of nobility – its structure was flat. A noble was a citizen, as good as any other. No formal aristocracy, no range ladder, no titles (some boasted, usually foreign, titles of barons, dukes, counts, whatever; it was a matter of courtesy to address them using these titles, but nothing more). Sure, there were differences of power, of wealth, of connections – just like in today's democratic societies. Any noble was eligible for any state office, including the throne. Any noble was entitled to vote (or not).

Of course, it always could be better – for example, cities were strongly underrepresented, and peasants not represented at all (formally they were, by ”their” lord, but such representation did not make them much good). System was clearly not ideal, but worked for long time — and I dare to say, for citizens it was better than absolutism so popular elsewhere. So how did it fail, and fail to the level of the state itself disappearing?

Well, dear reader in one of democratic states of today. Have you heard that simple message, that “taxes are bad”? That any attempt to curb oligarchs/barons/magnates influence is an attack on your rights? That every reform is just disguised plan to “take away your traditional freedoms”? That only warmongers want army, because who would attack us and why? Have you seen state organs paralyzed by seemingly absurd obstruction, with no real reason and no attempt to negotiate any settlement? Heard loud voices to abstain from voting, because it's futile? Seen random candidates out of nowhere, with history of enormous debts, but somehow having truckloads of cash for propaganda? Welcome to 18th century Commonwealth, then.

Finally we managed to get to senses. Rewrite laws. Vote a new constitution. It was too little and too late by then, and those who paid for all preceding paragraph took the ripe fruit. There was a war, so short that almost nobody remembers it, so ridiculously it was lost. Uprising. Another one. And another. It took, let me count… about two hundred years, ten uprisings (not sure if I counted all of them), multiple wars (including two world ones), two revolutions…

One of our then-neighbours has two hundred years of experience more in ”how to deal with democracies” field. You are at war. You just don't know it yet.

Zrobiłem (przyznaję, że na kolanie) #epub z „Porfirionem Osiełkiem” wg dostępnego na Polonie wydania Biblioteki Kwadrygi z 1929.

PDF z Polony zawierał co prawda warstwę tekstową, ale tak na oko z przepuszczenia przez OCR bez korekty czy jakiegokolwiek sprawdzenia, więc trochę poprawić musiałem, a jeśli coś pomyliłem, wdzięczny będę za uwagi. Nie ruszałem pisowni z 1929 roku, poza oczywistymi błędami.

Edit: nie wiem, czy moje „opracowanie” może być przedmiotem praw autorskich i przypuszczam że wątpię, ale gdyby było, to niniejszym oświadczam, że też jest w domenie publicznej.

Obejrzałem dziś Diunę Villeneuva. Z pewnych względów część pierwszą, której wcześniej nie miałem okazji.

Wizualnie piękna. I pierwszy raz zobaczyłem ornitoptery *), które krzyczały do mnie „to ma sens!”. A w nieuchronnym porównaniu z Diuną Lyncha... Wizualnie piękna. V. to malarz, ale L. — bajarz i kiedy idzie o snucie opowieści to wiem, do którego specjalisty się udać.

Nie żebym drugiej części nie miał obejrzeć, ale w kolejce się do kina ustawiał nie będę.

An interesting #android app appeared in F-Droid: whoBIRD, that tries to recognize #bird species by sound. It uses well-known #birdNET model, but contrary to official birdNET app, whoBIRD works offline – a very welcome feature, as internet access in the woods or among bogs usually leaves much to be desired.

I have yet to test it on real #birds, but so far it has properly recognized “human whistle” and ”machinery sounds” ;)

Thinking about Sumerians in a bit of dreamy way (seriously underslept), I have come with another explanation of their origins; explanation, that fits their:

  • appearance, esp. sleek round heads and long skirts
  • strange, isolated language with no relatives nor descendants
  • passion, skill and dexterity in waterworks
  • custom of writing on mud with a stick.

Obviously they were giant humanoidal beavers, now extinct. Skirts were to hide their flat tails.

Nie mogę sobie przypomnieć autora ani tytułu jednego polskiego opowiadania, czytanego przed laty chyba w Fantastyce, też pewien nie jestem. Świat cokolwiek w upadku, ale chyba nie postapo, raczej regres; struktury feudalne, ale oparte na hierarchii uczelnianej. Bohaterem był Tomasz doktor Fizyki, pan na Laboratorium Krystalografii (takie też były chyba pierwsze słowa opowiadania), pamiętam jeszcze że w herbie miał komórkę przestrzennie centrowaną na niebieskim polu…

Ktoś pamięta, ki czort?

Dziś zaglądam do banku. mBanku, póki co. W historii rachunku widnieje „Salonik kwiatowy”, kwota się zgadza, kategoria „zwierzęta”.

W Katowicach jest dzielnica Ochojec. Na jej granicy, w lesie, stoi tablica ( 🎶 W Katowicach jest dzielnica / Na granicy jej tablica... 🎶 ) z nazwą.

Nazwa na tablicy jest notorycznie przerabiana na Ochójeć. Czyszczona. Przerabiana. Czyszczona. Da capo senza fine.

Jechałem tamtędy niedawno. Tablica była akurat w fazie oczyszczonej... a przy okazji znacznie podwyższono rurki, na których stoi. Kiepsko mi szło ocenianie z samochodowego fotela, ale tak na oko ze trzy i pół metra będzie. Ciekawe, kiedy miejscowa partyzantka znajdzie kijek odpowiedniej długości.

Dąbrowa Górnicza. Miasto mało znane, jak jakiś interior afrykański zmapowane dopiero pod koniec lat '80. Miasto, które ma centrum, ale na peryferiach, a w środku tak na oko jest las. Gdzie ostatnia czynna kopalnia działa tylko dlatego, że nic nie wydobywa. Gdzie żyją bobry pustynne, a odetchnąć chodzi się na zasypaną kopalnię, starą kolej piaskową albo wyrobiska. Gdzie stoi Huta Katowice, bo Huta Dąbrowa jest w Lubelskiem.

W pobliżu centrum (to jest środka, bo centrum, jak wiemy, jest z boku), znajdują się dzielnice Łosień, Łęka i Okradzionów, które (w formie zgodnej z lokalną fonetyką „Łosień, Łęka i Łokradzionów”) znane są jako Trójmiasto.
W obrębie Trójmiasta mieści się najwyższe wzniesienie Dąbrowy. 390 m.n.p.m. Dowiedziałem się właśnie, że jakoś pod koniec 2015 doczekało się nazwy. Oto opowieść o jej genezie i pierwszym oficjalnym wejściu zimowym na szczyt.
