Nice to see the Bogaerts homer, but I think Don Orsillo needs to work on that home run call — “Bogey goes boom!” 4, 0, bottom of the fifth. @baseball

My favorite thing about hoarding retro technology is carrying it all up to my second floor apartment before deciding I don't actually want it

beisbolcards,
@beisbolcards@mastodon.world avatar

@rootcompute

Just be happy you (probably) still have somewhat good knees.

A few years ago I helped an uncle carry a huge old wooden tv to a third floor, once it was done I seriously thought he was going to pass out. And he never used it, just wanted to hoard it.

When it comes to sports, Mastodon is very seasonal.

World Cup, Superbowl, World Series, Opening Day, March Madness, NBA Finals and such will get a lot of engagement and then flatlines for a while.

It's almost as if we are just a bunch of cicadas.

After spending so much emotional energy on electoral politics in the 2010s, it makes me sad to look at countless others still wrapped up in the same desperate, futile struggle.

I'll go pull the lever that makes me feel like I'm doing my part, but participating in the everyday spectacle is not what life is supposed to be about. You cannot defeat fascism with posting and your constant engagement gives the system more power than you know. All roads lead to the same destination.

This past Sunday I skipped the first presidential debate and I didn't miss anything. Things are getting increasingly polarized here.

The morning after Trump won, I had a call with a team scattered over Michigan.

One by one, they were like "Wow, I can't believe the Cubs won", "Yeah, no one expected the Cubs to win" "I don't even know someone that roots for the Cubs here". It was hilarious at least, but this time I wonder how that would affect me now.

Royals are losing to the Guardians 8-5 in the top 8th.

Meanwhile, they are tied in the bot 8th 3-3 with the White Sox.

My cat Teela is going to the vet today, she is acting very weak and hasn't eaten or drank much over the past day or two as far as I can tell.

Send your well wishes out into the universe in whichever way that you see fit. We love her and hope she can make a speedy recovery.

A picture of Teela from when we were wrapping Christmas presents last year. She's safe and content inside a wrapping paper fort

Seems like good news, optimistic outlook, informative and with a clear path to good feline health. Sometimes all we can ask, a fighting chance.

Get better, Teela.

A Microsoft scientist finds a way to get GPT-4 to play Doom, and finds the AI often gets stuck in corners and ignores enemies. He also warns that the blunders could allow for 'potential misuse' in more serious applications. https://www.pcmag.com/news/openais-gpt-4-can-play-doom-but-only-like-a-noob

now I don't feel as dumb for viciously pressing space over the walls to find the secret hallways and getting killed over and over like Tom Cruise.

Disclaimer: I got chickenpox on my 21st birthday, so I ended up finishing all 32 levels of Doom II.

I have an election year, too.

And although not as divided, it's getting there. Sometimes you just have to vote to get someone out or avoid getting there, but this time I have no interest in the outcome.

Not that I shy away from politics but the conversation is very repetitive and wears you out fast, unless you want to be permanently angry and annoyed, which I refuse to do.

I like Adley but that ad much louder than whatever game I'm listening is really annoying.

Had not read Anthony Rendon comments.

I absolutely agree that there are things far more important than baseball, but if he sees it as just a job, he should've been fired a while ago.

The owners should collude and send all those players into one team just so everyone else can enjoy that mess.

Oh, and free Mike Trout! He doesn't deserve that.

grmpyprogrammer, to baseball
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

A professional player not really liking baseball is nothing new. A baseball player who has been hurt constantly and underperforming when not hurt saying “it’s just a job and not a top priority to me” is definitely asking for trouble with his teammates.

beisbolcards,
@beisbolcards@mastodon.world avatar

Wasn't Jeff King the one that didn't like baseball and retired as soon as his pension kicked in?

Don't know of anyone else like that

Ultrawide monitors are so funny to me. Let's take a large high-resolution monitor and just slice off the top half. Now That's Innovation™

beisbolcards,
@beisbolcards@mastodon.world avatar

@rootcompute

As the medical devices world has shown, "innovation" is not always a good thing, as it can break something that works well or get in the market just to stay in the race and not really needed by the end user but they'll be stuck with it because, well... corporations.

For fantasy baseball players who rightly believe in the concept of "angel's share," that your hardworking commissioner deserves a small cut of the grand prize, there is no better gift than Gary Cieradkowski's The League Of Outsider Baseball.

https://studiogaryc.com/baseball/league-of-outsider-baseball/

While you're waiting on that glorious payday, I highly recommend giving the Infinite Baseball Card Set a follow, too.

I've been on a muting spree lately in an attempt to make the federated timeline somewhat less unwieldy. Still, part of me wonders if the account that posts exclusively about Vietnamese spa treatments will go on to be one of the greatest posters on here and I'm going to miss out

beisbolcards,
@beisbolcards@mastodon.world avatar

@rootcompute

Used to do that, but now I've decided to hide a lot of reboosts otherwise my timeline would be Trump complaints 24/7. I get he's the worse piece of 💩 but it's not worth anyone's mental health. Don't mind the occasional rant, though. Don't have a fixed quota but 10 in an hour feels like too much.

That said, I prefer to reply to interesting posts (to me, at least) instead of just boosting them.
So far, seems to be working.

#ImmaculateGrid score: 77

A's took me a while. Was Canseco actually an MVP? Foxx? Reggie?

John Denny had been on my waiting list.

Looked a list of 1983 players and Alfredo Griffin rung a bell, so I checked his stars once I discarded him. When I saw he started his career for the Indians immediately thought of Eck for the final piece.

Players who would've fit on any team square: Manny Trillo, Doug Jones, Horacio Piña and Tim Worrell.
