The Christmas time is good for finding all the mailing lists that you are on, so you can unsubscribe 😂

So what to do about the price increase for #YouTube premium now?

Is there some #Opensource solution that blocks ads effective? At least in my local network?

Or are there any other approaches? 🤔

GitHub is going to start requiring 2FA on all accounts soon. This is not good.

People who don't have a smartphone (including me) are going to get locked out of using GitHub.

Reminder to everyone that you should allow contributions through things other than GitHub too.

Please boost this post so more people can be made aware of this.

bahuma20,

@hexaheximal you don't need a smartphone.

You still can use plain old SMS that works with a "dumb phone" or use an authenticator app that is installed on your notebook/pc/... (even if this is not so secure).

You could also use a Security Key (f. e. a Yubikey) as your second factor.

So nobody will be locked out as there are plenty of options.

There are projects that remove old methods without a prior warnings.

Then, there are projects that warn you that they will deprecate something in a future release.

bahuma20,

@mgorny and then there is Gitlab which just changes too much 😂

bahuma20,

Das sieht sehr vielversprechend aus. Werd ich mal ausprobieren 😎

in English, you call them "strawberries"

in Norwegian, they are "jordbær" - soilberries

bahuma20,

@thor In Germany it is "Erdbeeren" -> earthberries

mysk, to infosec

Google has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices.

TL;DR: Don't turn it on.

The new update allows users to sign in with their Google Account and sync 2FA secrets across their iOS and Android devices.

We analyzed the network traffic when the app syncs the secrets, and it turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted. As shown in the screenshots, this means that Google can see the secrets, likely even while they’re stored on their servers. There is no option to add a passphrase to protect the secrets, to make them accessible only by the user.

Why is this bad?

Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that’s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there’s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access .... 🧵

bahuma20,

@kirsch But be aware that storing 2FA in the same place as your passwords does break tge security it comes with... If your 1password safe get's hacked/leaked, nothing prevents an attacker to use your credentials. When having 2FA only on your phone, you are safe even when your 1password safe is hacked

bahuma20,

@yaitorr Good solution, but still doesn't prevent you from a virus on your computer that steals credentials once you are logged in to the 1password application.
