We all know MacOS sucks as an OS

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

Only redeeming thing is the deep integration with their other devices, which are great. The Continuity feature is really convenient. i wish there’s something else like it out there…

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

@ricard 😄 i feel like a lot of basic stuff is unnecessarily hard, usually if you don’t do it with their proprietary features… like managing photos, moving files, etc

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

@ricard Ah I see! I recently had to cleanup my mac to return to my employer, and I can say bulk manipulation of files (hundreds in my case) is still better at Windows. Windows show more details and generally more reliable. The easy path on Mac is pay for iCloud storage and backup there then sign in to a new laptop — that way it is like magic 😄

Which companies are doing cool things in the design systems / web components space?

Edited to clarify:

  • I mean companies whose main product is in this area, not companies who just have a nice design system.
  • Asking about smaller companies / startups I may not have heard of, not Big Tech

Today something happened for the !

Petition was presented in Canada's House of Commons on behalf of over 1000 supporters! The government must now respond!

It was a group effort including @Dragon @chad @Dunstable @bougiewonderland @LALegault @mike @stephanie @danamcfarland @bluefacedbeast and 1003 more!

In 🇨🇦? Write the Speaker and your MP! Send them this post! Outside 🇨🇦 ? Use this example!

We can make it happen!! 😊 👊

A video of the House of Commons routine proceedings presenting petitions. It starts with a view of the speakers chair and green seats in front of him with two large doors behind. Then it switches to View of MP Gordon John as he presents the petition.

@chris Where can we read more about the petition?

Gonna get hated (again) but this has to be said: hiring juniors who don’t understand the foundations (html, css, js) and the proper separation of concerns will be more expensive in the long run. This should be a non-negotiable. But now maybe the leading cause of frustration and failed projects. It’s a hiring problem. But managers don’t understand this. We need more tech people with battle scars in management positions

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

it’s a systemic problem where recruiters need to hit numbers, managers need to manage budgets, and sales people are very comfortable telling lies

A huge portion of traffic online does not come from humans; bots routinely scan exposed indexes for various purposes

Will add here links for handling bots.

I have been thinking about experimenting with a “federated search” for my blog, social, & personal site

Things I’ve been asked to produce over the years as a manager in security:

  • Blockchain strategy
  • Metaverse strategy
  • Generative AI strategy

Amount of times this has had any value: 0

Perhaps the reason businesses largely haven’t grown for a decade is because they have failed to concentrate on ensuring good operations and making products customers care about.. but instead they’ve rushed off the latest fad cliff like Lemmings.

Picked up my new glasses! Finally looking forward to less migraines

Also, opted for the transition lenses which will darken when outdoors. It has been a hassle switching between shades and non-shades

Did not get the blue light filters because devices these days come with blue light filter settings anyway

A lot of things that were "complained" about during 2022 twtr migration are being addressed or have been addressed. It is still far from being as smooth as a centralized platform but the Fediverse is taking shape.

We're in an awkward in-the-middle situation, I think, but lots of people are patiently going through with the changes.

The word “stan” is in the dictionary because of Eminem’s song “Stan”

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

#TIL Eminem released a sequel to Stan, 13 years later, titled “Bad Guy” — it resolved the story with a poetic justice and explains why he created both Slim Shady and Stan personas… there’s a third persona in this sequel song which connects the first two as a retrospective.

Genius

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

Personal opinion about Eminem. I think the darkness in his songs is a mirror of reality which no one has had the courage to speak of. He created personas fully knowing he, as the artist, will be taken quite literally but didn’t care. All reference to how Slim Shady was a worshipped celebrity is real for other celebrities. And Stan being an obsessive fan who neglects reality is all around us (and are us to a degree).

@ayo@ayco.io avatar

His retrospective is a retrospective of pop culture.

MacOS closes sub-menus when you click the parent menu item...

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

@avghelper this one is on Mail. Also try in Apple Music

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

@avghelper it is frustrating T_T

  • but yeah some does not do anything which is good; maybe devs have to code it to "prevent default" behavior of closing the menu
