@borgmatic Hey, looks like your Gitea is throwing 500 errors when trying to log in using Github.

I was going to try and improve the https://torsion.org/borgmatic/docs/how-to/provide-your-passwords/ guide to include how (wonderfully) simple it is to delegate providing the passphrase to a separate app using encryption_passcommand: pass borg-repokey.

It's a shame that info is not in the guide.

So i was able to fix my GNOME (Fedora) failing to log in by changing the firewall rules on the loopback interface (what the…)
Running "iptables -I INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT" was all it took, after a few weeks of having to log in by first putting gnome-session into failsafe mode. I would never have guessed this one.

@organicmaps hello! Did the button to remove a POI get removed? It feels like every other time i look for it (tap POI, expand bottom drawer) it's gone. It drives me a bit mad.

@organicmaps hey, i tried to find a French departement (and a small town in that departement) and Organic Maps returned absolutely nothing useful. I love the app, but this is pretty disappointing. I want to be able to see where a place I've not heard of before is on my map app.

Any ideas?

I'm starting to get curious about Plan 9 from Bell Labs. Beyond its wonderful name, just scratching the surface i can see it had some really interesting ideas and concepts.

Did anyone here ever use it? What was it like? I'd like to understand if some of its ideas made their way to other pieces of free and open source software we use today?

I never tire of reading about the absolute shipwreck that is Uber.

"Uber also covertly operated the microphones in its drivers' phones to listen for the chimes the Lyft app made: drivers who had both Lyft and Uber installed on their devices were targeted for (strictly temporary) bonuses."

Wonderful. More generally, as @pluralistic puts it Uber "invented algorithmic wage disrimination, an exciting new field of labor-law violations".

When did bluesky launch now? 6 months ago? Are there other servers than the bluesky social one?

A lot of people seem to think that companies like Google are highly rational.

But their obsession with AI at the cost of destroying the product they are known for, search – which reminds us of their obsession for "building a social network" (cf. Google Plus) – and the current debacle with Gemini not being able to answer basic requests shows they are in fact very much driven by emotion, mainly fear.

Unsurprisingly, far right idiots think it's because Google is "woke".

Just a reminder that we live in a world were the USA, supposedly a modern 1st world country, is currently passing child labour laws to make it easier to put kids to work, not harder.

Progress is never secured, only temporarily won, and we need to keep fighting for every bit of it.

Location services in #GNOME are eerily precise. As in, to a few metres. Even when tunnelling all traffic through a Wireguard VPN exiting in a different country.

As someone still a bit scarred by Enemy of the State even 25 years later, that freaks me out.

And a cursory search has not reassured me much. It uses Mozilla location services, that much is clear, but how does it still provide such a precise location when traffic is tunnelled?

https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/privacy-location.html.en provides no info or explanation.

Really? It's 2024, i'm pretty sure this is a behaviour that should be enforced by your mail reader rather than me artificially breaking
lines just
to
fit an ancient

Also, how many pixels wide is your screen? I mean, it's up to you if you want to read text on the visual equivalent of a pocket pack of tissues at the end of the day i suppose.

Well done. Facebook (sorry, "Meta"): "Reality Labs has now lost more than $45 billion since the end of 2020, when Meta first began reporting the business segment separately."

Yes, billion with a B.

That's an insane amount of money. I don't even want to go into the whole "think how many hospitals could have been funded with that money".

On the upside, they are consistent in their idiocy and i was wrong to say they'd quietly stopped investing in it. Nope, still going.
