I had a bit of time to record two new tracks to my ongoing instrumental/ambient project “music for snailports”. Trying to just have a mini idea of how I want something to sound and then doing some spontaneous recording. These ones came out a bit or like kind of reminds me of being by the ocean.

Here’s the bandcamp for listening, the new ones are “C” and “D”:

@jake4480 😊 yeah, I’ve played my whole life too, but I feel like there’s still so much left to explore for sure 🎵

a lazy Saturday morning listen to Bobby Charles’ self titled country funk style album from 1972 (2014 LITA reissue). With musical support from members of The Band, a chilled out soulful song based record. Kind of a playful humour going on too, which I enjoy.

Bert Jansch - Rosemary Lane (1971). Maybe the most Nick Drake-like album Jansch did, if only for the hushed tone and pastoral feel. It’s a record of just warm poised guitar and vocals. Great version of “reynardine” the traditional tune. @vinylrecords

@mangrovevalley @vinylrecords love his debut, admittedly I’m a pretty big fan and love almost all his eras, but his solo recordings (no band) are all stellar. It’s amazing how fully formed he was even on his debut

I realized they’ve opened up Bandcamp Live (online concert tool) to everyone. So, gonna try it out and do a folky set on May 19th 9pm EST/6pm PST (free show)

I’m new to live streaming, but figure it could be fun to connect musical pals near and far with some songs and fingerstyle guitar.

You can RSVP here:

William Eaton - s/t / 1978 (Reissued 2020 by Morning Trip records). A blissful and uplifting record of instrumental guitar. The liner notes say some of it was recorded on a 26 string guitar Eaton built called an “Elesium Harmoniom”. It’s a beautiful set of spontaneous performances recorded “in a garden”. With everything going on, good to have some peaceful vibes coming through the speakers.

I’m just here to say that the”Fallout” show is hilariously good and also dystopic and great stuff. A good show to watch for its serious and dark moments as well as its comedy (guest spots from Fred Armisen and Chris Parnell and the voice of Matt Berry were particularly up my alley)

I have never played the game, but the world and storytelling of the show fly on their own.

#NowListening to Marc Emery - “Listening Music/Anfang” (reissue 2022 of 1974-75 recordings). Really loving the gentle lilt of this mostly instrumental LP this morning. A cool archival reissue that would appeal to fans of the Tompkins square label guitar soli retrospectives. Great #guitarInspiration too. Once I’m fully over this cold I’m hoping to get back to playing.

I was brainstorming flyer art ideas for a small show I'm planning with another local experimental folk artist at the DIY arts space this summer.

I was looking up for old posters (the drawing style and level of fine tuning involved seems doable!) and there's a bunch of spots with archives of them online.

Here's one from Tumblr:

And here's one from Cornell, which is pretty neat:

I feel a little cheesy saying it, but celebrating the rad music made by women! On the other end, particularly in regards to the collector scene, women musicians are frequently less recognized. If you don’t have enough records by women in your collection, whether physical or digital, that make you want to listen to a wider range you stuff, get some! It will open up your ears to cool stuff you may be missing out on. @vinylrecords

Good job by everyone on the today. I feel like mastodon needed this a bit, to loosen up just a little notch

Reminder it's within the spirit of the hashtag to delete any and all posts you don't want to stand behind tomorrow.

I don't think we should overuse the idea, but there's no reason the Jubilees should be restricted to leap days. For instance, when Trump inevitably keels over from brain parasites while cheating at golf, that will also be a suitable occasion.

@mrcompletely enjoyed reading the hashtag posts :) thanks for sending out the idea

With a bit more time on my hands, uploading clips as I find time to make more home recording blips.

Here's a demo of me noodling around with effects and Bossanova forms. There's a rhythmic noise sound that was created by one part of the effects that I left in this demo because I thought it sounded neat. Kind of a wintry filter on the Bossa sound after the blizzard we had here.

@arts@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely thanks for listening! I did a little fiddling around with the pedal that was causing the snowy blips. I was able to get the hiss part of the sound to go away (since for other purposes it shouldn’t be in the signal). But I’ve got a bit of a recording of it on its own so I can sample it for later use :)

Haven't checked in with what I'm doing with my own music for a little while here. Since we arrived out east 10 days ago, I've been able to pick up my guitar a bit again now that we're unpacked some. Mostly been enjoying playing some fingerstyle stuff, like this bit of Mississippi John Hurt inspired meandering earlier this Sunday morning.

Here's a bit of it on YouTube:

A snowy morning and listening to The Jesus and Marie Chain’s 1987 LP Darklands. It’s peak scuzz yet restrained guitars and big 80’s drums, and melodic I-IV-I progressions that are so satisfying. Somehow this album makes me have a big smile every time I listen. @vinylrecords

LP album cover: red text on black background above and below a blurry main photo featuring two indistinct figures in silhouette with blue backdrop, possibly a stage, with other bits of blurred orange, white and black.

Listening to Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears (2003). An album with super real songwriting, dealing with sadness, loss and being defiant about it, which Williams is great for. Recommended for fans of 90s/2000s alt country, with big sound and gritty yet slick production. @vinylrecords

Amid the chaos in our living room of post Christmas morning, taking some time to cue up my favourite Madlib instrumental project. 2004’s Yesterday New Quintet versions of Stevie Wonder tunes, called “Stevie”. It’s loungey, but in that way where things feel slightly off their usual mix, a unique take on the material.

Here it is on bandcamp too:

Thrift store finds today. Currently listening to “The Latin Sound of Henry Mancini” (1965) which has a kind of beautiful stereo mix and enough percussion to make the compositions feel bubbly and fun.

The other one, Dylan Thomas reading “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” (1964) is a holiday fave from growing up, nostalgic and magical @vinylrecords

The cover to Dylan Thomas reading A Child’s Christmas in Wales. A black and white and red cover with line drawing of a small town in winter time under a snowy sky.
