Let’s suppose a friend without any coding experience wants to get started with a personal website.

What advice would you give and which service – or approach – would you recommend?

And yes, I’m asking for my #OwnYourWeb newsletter subscribers again. 😉 RT=🎉

@anniegreens@social.lol avatar

@matthiasott If they've never actually written HTML or CSS (or even JS, though that could come later), there's nothing wrong with just writing some static files on your computer and serving it up in your browser and being amazed.

Even playing with something like the Stylus extension in Firefox for instant CSS changes and getting familiar with devtools, all from the comfort of your computer before even putting anything out there.

What were your favorite #blog posts of the year? 🤔

And, in case you have a personal site, which of your own posts was your fave or the most “successful” of 2023?

(Asking for my #newsletter subscribers, of course. 😊)

anniegreens,
@anniegreens@social.lol avatar

@matthiasott According to the analytics:

  1. On micro.blog and how I want to use it. (https://weblog.anniegreens.lol/2023/07/on-micro-blog-and-how-i-want-to-use-it )
  2. Types of blog posts. (https://weblog.anniegreens.lol/2023/11/types-of-blog-posts )
  3. Diving into indiewebify.me & microformats, a series. (https://weblog.anniegreens.lol/2023/12/diving-into-indiewebify-me-microformats-a-series )

Personally, I had the most fun with the microformats series, and I'd originally sat on it thinking no one would be interested. The series landing ended up being a hit due to getting picked up by a link-lister.

Newly added to my collection: <link-peek>!

Turn any regular anchor link into a rich preview (also known as an ‘unfurled’ link). Can be used with any JSON API and allows for custom templating.

Prefect for creating more visual interest on links without filling the page with additional HTML noise:

📝 What I've learned about CSS color-scheme and friends. (https://weblog.anniegreens.lol/2024/04/what-ive-learned-about-css-color-scheme-and-system-color)

CSS color-scheme tells the browser what scheme a website supports, ensuring proper contrast with elements and controls between light and dark color schemes, and a whole lot more.

everyone: whining about twitter cutting off anonymous viewing

me: yes, that’s what facebook, instagram, pinterest, et al, have been doing to users like me without accounts for years and years, no public service or agency should be exclusively putting content on any of these platforms

Researching web font stacks, and I used to have a good set of sites to look at for this, but that was years ago and I've long since forgotten them.

What are some resources/websites in use today for finding font stacks, or new fonts, or good fallbacks? I'd also like this research to include fallbacks/system fonts that I could rely on for themes I'm creating.

Many thanks for suggestions and boosting!

Mastodon filters are so great. Some things I filter outright and don't even have to see a CW for. Others I have still show, just in case I feel like toggling the CW and seeing what's up. Just super flexible and a really valuable feature. Why anyone still puts up with other platforms I can't fathom.

New little project: I have an idea for a blog posting month thing in May. I might have already alluded tot his with a recent set of questions, and though I particularly want to include folks from omg.lol and those using weblog.lol (the name goes with this) anyone can participate.

I'll be creating a one-pager with some info, it'll be informal and participation will be loose, but maybe we can use a hashtag. More to come!

If you've been involved with or organized a writing/blogging challenge, especially a month-long challenge, and one that is adhering to a topic, what advice do you have?

  • If you were part of the topic making decision, how did you choose the topic?
  • What type of topics have you found most successful and challenging at the same time?
  • Finally, have you found keeping the group small to help with the writing?

toying around in CSS … using:

  • css custom properties
  • color-mix
  • color(display-p3 N N N / N)
  • light-dark
  • prefers-color-scheme
anniegreens,
@anniegreens@social.lol avatar

@sarajw This is using color-mix() with my accent-color custom property for the style with Field system color on input[type="text"], select, and textarea, in both the light and dark scheme. This is just the level of "hue" I was thinking I wanted. Not using a percentage for either but I might play around with it to get it "just right". Love it!

☎️ Waiting for a phone call may be one of the worst things in the world.

anniegreens,
@anniegreens@social.lol avatar

Okay, so, proposal to get rid of the phone part of our pocket computers, go back to having a single solitary place for a call, which defaults to a message/voicemail, and is the expected result of calling said phone, instead of this stupid always-with-you-yet-you-never-get-or-take-the-call game we are playing now.
