A photo I’ve taken at La Roche-sur-Foron 🇫🇷 station in April 2002: Pictured here is dual-current (1.5 kV DC and 25 kV AC) #SNCF #Z2 unit #9614 still in its original livery from the 1980s.

The first full day on the #IndianPacific 🇦🇺 with an afternoon arrival into #Adelaide. Nice views from the cabin window throughout. On some occasions, when the train is going through a curve, one can see the two engines at the front of the train‘s long consist.

Boarding the #IndianPacific 🇦🇺 at #Sydney Central. The train is almost 30 cars long. The 4,352 km long journey to #Perth, on the other end of #Australia, will last 65 hours they say. Plenty of mileage ahead then. And what a beautiful train!

#Sydney’s 🇦🇺 commuter network is not only land-based: a range of passenger ferry lines are serving neighbourhoods bordering the harbour. And the fine catamarans operating on these waterborne routes provide some nice sightseeing opportunities. 😊

Early morning sees quite a number of #InterCity services coming and going to and from #Sydney 🇦🇺 Central. These services are usually worked by very nice trainsets that look familiar to the British traveller: their design is very close to the #InterCity125 #HST.

Good Morning from #Sydney 🇦🇺 Central Station, a busy transport hub with #InterCity and #Suburban train services, #LightRail and more. It also is a nice place for the railfan (and, I understand, a convenient one for the commuters).

Evening at #Wellington 🇳🇿: arrival of the “Northern Explorer” from #Auckland.
This undoubtedly is another one of the world’s great train stations.

#Auckland 🇳🇿 to #Wellington by train means a full day of travelling. Yet time passes quickly with all these options on the table, be it, literally, this delicious cheese platter (together with some New Zealand Merlot) or, figuratively, with these vistas from the fresh air car. 😊

The #Auckland 🇳🇿 to #Wellington #GreatJourneysNZ “Northern Explorer” climbs up to National Park station (825 metres a.s.l.) by means of the complex “Raurimu Spiral”, a line development with loops and hairpin bends, reminding me of the #Albula line in Switzerland.

The #Auckland 🇳🇿 to #Wellington “Northern Explorer” is, I’m told, famous for its viewing options. And indeed: in addition to the seat cars with their large panorama windows, there’s a viewing platform for some (very) fresh air feeling with just a set of handrails, and the roof.💨

One of the (many) highlights of the trip on the “Coast Starlight” down to Los Angeles 🇺🇸: before reaching Santa Barbara we travel right next to the #Pacific Ocean, and under the evening sun. All of this, while enjoying dinner, served by a lovely crew in the #Amtrak @diningcar.

#Portland, OR 🇺🇸 is the first “smoke stop” on the southbound #Amtrak Coast Starlight: everyone who wants may get off the train for a moment and stretch their legs. The lovely departure board in the main hall dates back to pre-digital times. And we again meet the Cascades #Talgo.
