I accidentally became the CISO. I didn't want this job, but the job chose me. I'm scared, and I want to go home.

No, I cannot, in good faith, recommend that you lay-off half of your key stakeholders in the middle of your SOC2 audit.

I want to see a remake of Yes Man (Jim Carey) called “No, Man” where the main character is a chronically overcommitted introvert that must start saying “no” to everyone and everything. They learn how to set boundaries and it changes their life.

Humans are amazing at justifying stupid things to ourselves.

Me: I suppose I should make my breakfast.

Wife: Oh, I just cleaned up the kitchen. Sorry, I didn’t know you didn’t eat yet.

Me: No worries, I can make a mess again. I’m good at that.

accidentalciso,

@0x58 She said "Oh, I know." 🤣😭

I always assume when I redline contracts that the other party’s legal counsel gives a big smile and says “aww, that’s so cute, he’s trying to lawyer!”

It’s GO TIME! The presale campaign for FLOAT, a new children’s picture book is live! This book is adorable and the kids in your life will love it. The link is in the next post. For all my hacker friends, I’m going to tell you why I’m excited about it, why FLOAT is so important to its publisher Bookling Media, and why Bookling Media is so important to creators.

FLOAT is being published under a new model. It is one in which the author/illustrator retains all their intellectual property rights to their creation. It is a model that I hope catches on and disrupts the industry. Hack the planet!!

To put it as simply as I can, the traditional publishing model is broken. It is nearly impossible for creators to make a living on book sales. Royalties are generally cents per book, and many authors never surpass their advance.

To add insult to injury, the author sells their rights to the publisher. The publisher can pull marketing support for a book or take it out of print leaving the author with little recourse, and no way to make money from their work. This happens more often than most realize.

Self-publishing has never been easier, but comes with its own challenges, not the least of which is the stigma in the book trade around self-published titles. It is unfortunate the way the industry treats those who take their destiny into their own hands.

Bookling Media’s model was designed to protect creators’ intellectual property rights, provide the support that a publisher provides, and offer legitimacy in the eyes of the industry that comes from being published “traditionally”.

How do I know all of this, you may ask? Well, I’ll tell you a secret.

My wife founded Bookling Media in 2020. She published her own book first to build out the model, the processes, and the industry relationships necessary to develop, print, distribute, and market children’s picture books.

We’re not talking about a one-person show and print on demand here.
We’re talking about hiring a team of industry professionals with decades of industry experience to work on the project, and print runs using the same manufacturers that print some of the highest quality picture books on the market.

What she has built is amazing, and FLOAT will be no less amazing. It is a huge step for Lary Daley, the author/illustrator, as his first published picture book.

But it is also a huge step for Bookling Media, a small independent press. FLOAT legitimizes Bookling Media as a true publisher in the eyes of the industry.

This isn’t just a children’s picture book. It is the start of a revolution that challenges the status quo in the publishing industry. It proves that there are better ways of publishing.

So, really, what's the worst that could happen?

I had a dream that my laptop fell off the table and the screen smashed. What does that mean?

  • accidentalciso,

@Lockdownyourlife you would be bored out of your mind consulting for normal things.

Hypothetically, if my friend wanted to move from being a CISO at a large company to a consultant, what is the best way to go about it?

    accidentalciso,

@jerry It's actually pretty easy and inexpensive to get the business side of things set up so that all the contracts can be put under the business.

    accidentalciso,

@jerry There is a little soul searching to help define what their individual goals with the business are and to define what types of clients/jobs they want to target and what types of clients/jobs they don't want to do. Focus is important. Sales can be hard, but chasing everything that moves is harder. (And a waste of time.)

    accidentalciso,

@jerry As far as sales go, work a two-pronged approach. They should work their network to identify some possible direct clients. Also, start building relationships with complementary businesses that already have clients but don't have a security consulting practice, such as IT MSPs.

    accidentalciso,

@jerry They should decide which service offerings they want to define and lead with for sales, then create some marketing literature to help others sell their services. Anything that helps others refer folks to you or sell for you is a win, because it cuts down on time spent on sales.

    accidentalciso,

@jerry As they determine their rates, they should plan on about 20 billable hours per week being full capacity, because the other half of their time will be sales/marketing and running a business. Also, when selling, negotiate on scope, not rates.

I really need to stop having ideas. I just keep making more work for myself.

A few years ago, I was burned out to the point where I had nothing left for myself or my family. I was forced to make drastic changes in my life.

    Does that sound like you?

I made a series of short videos talking about my experience with burnout and recovering from it. The first video is just an intro to the series, so start with the second video in the playlist. The sixth video is important.

I hope that by talking openly about mental health and burnout in #CyberSecurity #infosec, we will be able to help folks understand that they are not alone. If you are struggling, please talk to friends or loved ones about it. I'm always willing to listen, too. My DMs aren't wide open, but I look at every reply and will always follow back on request to switch to DM. Please don't be shy.

    accidentalciso,

@SecureOwl Never! The day that I realized that my mental and physical health was worth more than any amount of money, it made the decision to walk away a lot easier. No matter what happened, I knew I'd at least have my health and my family.

I finally finished the last two videos in my series about burnout!

The fifth video is probably the most important in the series. It talks about what I did about burnout.
