Thebquited storage figures for Flatpaks are misleading. They don’t use that much. I have 50+ Flatpaks installed and they use barely more than 2.4GB.

And Flatpaks are great. There’s nothing to ew at.

TheGrandNagus,

Think about it this way: going onto Linux communities and listening to what people say can be like listening to car mechanics chat.

But do you need to know what all of that stuff means to drive your car? Nah. But that info could come in handy, if you wanted to modify your car or something like that.

You don’t need to know what Wayland/X11, PipeWire, GTK4/Qt6, or anything like that is, in much the same way you don’t need to know what PowerShell, Event Viewer, NT kernel, or registry are to use Windows.

TheGrandNagus,

Or show calendar entries/weather for the day.

Anything would be better than landfill.

TheGrandNagus,

Yeah the problem isn’t so much that apple did that (a slower but functional device is infinitely better than a device that doesn’t function), but that they didn’t communicate it to users, and even after a battery replacement, the phone would often stick to being throttled (not sure if this was just for third party repairs or all repairs, but either isn’t acceptable).

TheGrandNagus,

If by “incorrectly done” third party repairs, you mean ones that don’t subscribe to apple’s repair programme that insists on you giving up user’s personal information, only using Apple parts both in the device and for the disassembly, and paying Apple fees, then sure.

But that’s not how third party repairs should be done and you’d be massive cunt for championing that kind of bullshit business practice.

TheGrandNagus,

It’s perfectly fine to like the art and not the artist, you know.

Harry watches the government get taken over by fascists and then decides to go be a cop.

Not every police force is the ultra-militarised right wing type you see in North America. I must admit I’m quite tired of people thinking US culture applies worldwide. There’s a whole world outside of the USA. You need to accept that just because something is one way in the US, doesn’t mean it’s that way everywhere.

I’m currently living in the UK and despite their police force often being useless due to 14 years of Conservatives underfunding them, I’ll give them credit for not being violent and being extremely adept at de-escalation, and for regularly and overwhelmingly saying no when they are surveyed and offered more lethal weapons. They adamantly do not want more power. Police in the UK, as a general rule, lean left, not right.

Of course you do occasionally hear about a police officer doing something dodgy, but it’s pretty rare and makes national or even international news when it happens.

There’s very much a culture of them working for the public as opposed to being a military force that terrorises the public.

Plus the government previously being fascist doesn’t mean people working for them are fascist, particularly not after a change in government. Harry became an Auror when Hermione became Minister of Magic. It wasn’t a fascist government then. Is every public sector employee in Spain, Italy, Germany, etc a fascist just because they had a fascist government in the past?

I don’t like the art, it’s poorly written.

Poorly written, sure, I’d say a lot of it is too (so time-turners canonically exist but nobody goes back to stop Voldemort or stop victims from being killed by him? Ok lol), but so are lots of things. Not everybody is a Tolkien-level world-builder.

Regardless, it doesn’t change the point, you can think JKR is a transphobic twat and still like a book. Rudyard Kipling has some great poems and books, despite being racist. Roald Dahl wrote brilliant childrens books despite being a raving antisemite. As an Indian, I have great respect for Ghandi, despite him being racist, enormously antisemitic, and likely even paedophilic. The Smiths made great music despite Morrissey being a cunt. Etc.

If you want to discard work on account of the artist’s personalities, then fair enough, more power to you, it’s a personal thing what your boundaries are. I’m just saying it’s fine to like the art but not the artist too.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

Where have I said I like JKR? Where’s the hypocrisy?

You were the one who brought up events after the books, now I’m not to talk about it otherwise it’s somehow an endorsement of transphobia or something? Lmao

And of course it’s still art - it’s part of the world that the author created. I don’t see how you could possibly argue that it isn’t. It’s HP universe stuff.

Do the events of The Silmarillion not count as art, because it came out years after the LOTR trilogy?

TheGrandNagus,

Auror, not cop.

And again, stop asserting that other police forces are like that of the US. Other countries exist and have different cultures, curb your nationalism just a little bit.

I never mentioned fanfic, this is again you going off on a wild tangent.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

You keep bringing up US political dynamics.

Stuff from the author is not fanfiction. I think you need to brush up on what fanfiction means. You’d think the meaning would be obvious since the word quite literally describes itself.

And yes, a fascist government imposed fascism in the HP universe… Then a non-fascist government succeeded it… honestly, how is this hard to grasp?

TheGrandNagus,

Respect to Sony for that. As one of the biggest sellers of Bluetooth audio equipment, they’re one of the ones that would gain most from nobody being able to use 3.5mm

TheGrandNagus,

And stereo front speakers, IIRC

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

Good guy CCP, breaking us free of government control, must be so good to live under them 🥰 more CCP control pls 😍🥰🥰

TheGrandNagus,

So fucking annoying that this shit gets rejected time and time again and yet they’re allowed to just keep on asking and asking.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

Where I work, doing it won’t end up in being fired, but it would certainly prevent promotions and payrises.

TheGrandNagus,

To be fair, Data was designed to be like a human, and was made in the image of his creator. He has a number of design decisions that are essentially down to his creator wanting to create something like a human. Including that which you describe.

Data was never intended to work like a PC, it’s very normal that he can’t just wirelessly interface with stuff.

TheGrandNagus,

The fact that the US allows companies to flat out steal your device during a repair process is insane. This is theft. Actual straight up theft.

Surely this doesn’t even need any new laws - I’m pretty sure theft is already illegal

TheGrandNagus,

Damn windows seems really complicated.

TheGrandNagus,

Funny thing is, I find myself forced to use the command prompt more in Windows than I do the terminal in Linux. And don’t get me started on the absolute nightmare that the windows registry is.

TheGrandNagus, (edited )

Is it stupid? I doubt MS cares about the absolutely miniscule amount of people who will care enough to complain about this. Those people would probably just turn the feature off, or use a different OS, anyway. Catering to that audience isn’t something MS cares about.

The average user won’t do a thing. MS gets to outsource the computational work of all this spying to their users and then hoover up the data at the end. Microsoft stands to gain a lot from this in the markets where it will be allowed to fly.

TheGrandNagus,

And for battery life, see if you can find any info on what others have got with your machine. I’ve got anything from a fair bit better, to the same, to an absolute catastrophe.

Cis is just a Latin prefix that means “on the same side of”, and is the opposite of trans, which means “on the other side of”.

I.e. your gender identity is the same as what you were assigned at birth, therefore cis.

Another prefix that would fit well, as it means “the same as/equal/alike” would be homo.

Perhaps we should indulge Elon’s wishes and instead use the term homogender or homo, for short. I’m sure he’d love that.

TheGrandNagus,

The UK* is waaaaaaaaaaaay more open about sex and nudity than the US

TheGrandNagus,

It’s far from just GNU utils, though.

Should we say “I don’t use Linux, I use GNU+Linux+systemd+pulseaudio+Wayland+Gnome+[etc]”
