If I can grow muscle and sinew, I must remember how to grow a heart.

Not these tasks,
not my tricks with bruises.

To wake with dry cheeks, without
wandering through time

and other things;
to remember them, too.

The question of gravity
was settled with the impact
of a non-Newtonian kind.

Less science than sense.
The sensation of scraped hearts,
hands and knees.

The body is an athletic cliche;
a soma collapsed; expiring.

Get up, get it, get out.
The hammer in the chest.
Bags of air, heaving.

Say something, anything;
breathe, curse,
confess...

But stop the damn weeping.

I have been playing guitar again recently. It gave me another struggle to focus on, a reason to force myself to carry on.

'This House, This Garden'

We once grew, rootbound
together, here, in our naive garden.

Guileless, like a child's summer,
in so many ways, blind
to the unseen creep of the vine
that squeezed and pinched;
that choked and withered
in the night.

This greenhouse was not a home.

If a stone could have been cast,
we would have been first; now
we're better suited to be buried
beneath the last.

Why are we here? Why now?
There is only the filth of the past.

'By The Door'

I could not answer her
with ease—
our hips were too close
and we were neither here
nor anywhere, two strangers
bent into a kiss;
a merged shadow by the door.

She's shed her troubles
with her jacket...
The night was warm,
brought to heat
by the symbiosis of
meaningless debate and alcohol.

She scribbled some numbers
on my hand.

I felt a dull ache.

The music was too loud.
Her name was obscure, mine
difficult to recall.

'A Place Well-Travelled'

Lying in a motel room,
spinning, like the fan.

Downdraft of the familiar;
a shiver, for what comes
next.

Shower, sud down a memory.
Lean upside-down, dry hair
over the balcony.

Watch the TV naked, with a coffee.
Call out for clever after-dinner
company.

Check out by 10 am;
baggage stowed, heavy.

Rented spaces, vacated.
Voids almost emptied.

Writing in isolation (i.e. I have no poetry reading group, no trusted first readers or found family of fellow poets) may be causing some blockages

For instance, I think it's keeping me rather conservative in my creative choices. More bold experiments, like illustrated poems, would be a fun route to take, but the stakes on that project seem much higher, and sinking a bunch of effort into it without any feedback as to whether it's resonating... ?

@miksimum @miksimum A good writing group certainly can inspire, and be very helpful for skill acquisition. I have been fortunate in the past to be part of several such groups, although they seem hard to come by now. My most recent groups have been on Reddit, which was both helpful and unhelpful at the extreme ends of the spectrum.

Just using the hashtag below, would anyone be able to offer assistance to this query? Online, or face-to-face, of course.

@miksimum Just a last point, a poetry group that works well often often has at least two levels of critique, but I am sure that you knew that anyway.

TashPoetry,
@TashPoetry@writing.exchange avatar

@miksimum
'General' critique may be more to do with the feel of the poem - e.g. consistency of imagery, length, some tips around punctuation, avoiding cliches etc. This is useful for beginner to intermediate, or if the poet feels sentimental about the poem and does not want it critique harshly.

'Hard' critique is turning over every stone in the poem, from meter/form adherence, to "why is this stanza crap, get rid of it". Use of tools e.g. alliteration vs assonance, going beyond end rhymes etc.

TashPoetry,
@TashPoetry@writing.exchange avatar

@miksimum I actually keep my favourite critiques from the groups I participate in, even the harsh ones. They are great opportunities to learn from. I have attached one example to this toot - this was some great feedback on the title of the poem itself.

TashPoetry,

@miksimum Incomplete poems often benefit from hard critiques when you need a fresh set of eyes to see what is not working.

Sometimes we also get attached to sections that do not belong, and we need someone to tell us no.

'Wishbone'

A childhood, ascending,
as a vine to branch,
pretending.

Not unlike now,
wined and dulled,
except for the falling.

Compliant, instead of pliant.
Pulled in first by ankle, then the knee.

It hurts, it always hurts,
to fulfill your fucking needs.

I wish, I wish
to be something else than this.

'Waiting For Persephone'

This is a message for the shedding
of the will and of dreams,
to the mistress masquerading
as a reluctant queen.

Persephone, I am as tranquil
and still as the twist of death
that shadows the hangman’s noose.

Sleep, they tell me.
Ignore the dials and electrodes,
until spring sets the world in bloom.

'Absent'

Father, the white voids of my PTSD
obscure my childhood -
my formative memories,
although I do recall
how you once carried me softly;
my heart light as a cloud,
head heavy with sleep.

It's me, Father,
can you hear me calling?
I am not such a burden now, though
I often face the day unsupported,
wondering.

Dementia erodes your identity
like a reef under the relentless sea.
I am helpless to stop it.

But Father, I love you, still.
Even without the memories.
