I'm SUPER excited about the new laptops coming out, but we're definitely going to see a FLURRY of "how to" tutorials on "how to disable Microsoft's new AI features" within minutes of embargoes lifting.

Hawaii, to windows
@Hawaii@mastodon.world avatar

Another reason to use any OS except #Windows:

#Microsoft revealed a new AI-powered feature called "Recall" for Copilot+ PCs that will allow Windows 11 users to search and retrieve their past activities on their PC. To make it work, Recall records everything users do on their PC, including activities in apps, communications in live meetings, and websites visited for research.“ #privacy #tech

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/microsofts-new-recall-feature-will-record-everything-you-do-on-your-pc/

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@Hawaii The main issue, we kind of have to hope that DESPITE terrible "features" like recall, this hardware sells well enough for more interest in linux support.
If recall can be disabled, and I HAVE TO believe on a Windows Pro machine it will be for companies to be happy, then we'll see some progress on support for linux distros.

Watching this laptop buying guide by @SomeGadgetGuy after the recent announcement of Microsoft's Surface running on the new ARM chips from Qualcomm

Like him, I too am interested in all the new Laptops not only by Microsoft but the many OEMs (HP. Dell, Asus, Acer etc) that will hit the market in a short time, not for the AI features but for our usual day-to-day computing on devices that are now on a different architecture that will have long-lasting battery, run silently, and have plenty of performance for our tasks.

Also, looking into the chips themselves and what specs they're paired with the system RAM depending upon core counts, and performances

@RealGene @mountdiscovery
At launch it will be a massive pain and totally broken, but if we see SOME traction in the business space, it'll improve fast. Lenovo is already putting some pressure on there.

Just last week, Qualcomm announced better kernel support for Linux, and they've published an experimental debian build.

Generative AI will allow so many people to be creative, like designing your product to be just like a character from someone else's film!

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@danhon it's so disappointing to even see this era of LLM being called "AI". The incredible amount of compute power and copyright violations getting us to this point where a platform can combine words to spit out familiar images.
The next phase of this style modeling will require a leap in data center computers, huge increases in energy consumption, significantly more pollution, and will guzzle billions of gallons of water.
And it'll only be a little bit better at spitting out things we've already seen. It still won't be able to make anything "new".

AI Laptop REACTIONS!

Checking out all the announcements today from Dell, HP, Microsoft, Samsung, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo! I did a live recording of my reactions.
Windows on ARM is getting REALLY exciting! Here are some things to look out for while shopping a new "AI" laptop!

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

This video started out as a "react" video, but kind of became a buying guide.
It's a little longer, but here's the deal, if you've only shopped Intel and AMD computers, you might not know what makes Qualcomm chips different.
Especially frustrating how many manufacturers just list generic specs like "12 core CPU", instead of telling you what parts are IN THE laptop.
Also, had to have a chat about RAM. Is 16GB of RAM enough in a world of on-device AI?
(No, no it's probably not...)

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@MartinBe If we want better hardware for Linux machines, we have to want this hardware to succeed in Windows land.
Unfortunately we're still tied to a consumer electronics market economy.

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@MartinBe Tuxedo makes some cool gear, but we shouldn't expect boutique manufacturers to fulfill the same quantity of sales necessary for consumer demand.

Like the 15" Tuxedo laptop is a perfect example of what I'm talking about about.

The reason we can get good prices on 12th gen Core I5's today, is because when that chip was new, it was produced at a huge scale to cover consumers and corporations. Those corporate contracts delivered longer support and replacement parts for other companies like Tuxedo to benefit from years later.

The success of X Elite today is what will determine mini PC and boutique prices in three years.

We need to be good educators to help consumers find these alternatives, but we can't pretend we're not tied to this market.

It's going to take YEARS still to make meaningful changes to consumer spending, and we can't progress if Linux machines consistently stay YEARS behind Windows offerings.

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@MartinBe
Oh no arguments on tuxedo, they do great work.

But my point still stands that Tuxedo can NOT leverage the same kind of sales to get the pricing that would keep them competitive against Dell purchasing. In fact, Tuxedo would likely become a brand you would not want to do business with if they hit that kind of scale.

So for Tuxedo to offer that support, and keep prices in check, they offer 2-3 year old components.

So if we want them to succeed with ARM chips in 2 years, we have to hope ARM chips reach a scale that Tuxedo can benefit from for better pricing.

Along the way, we have to hope Qualcomm keeps up streaming better Linux support and experimental distros, so nerds like me can install a working distro on hardware becoming out this year.

The more interest there is in corporate sales, the faster we get better Linux support for end users.

SomeGadgetGuy, to random
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

Anyone shopping a laptop today LOL?
Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all dropping laptops.
I think I want to go with an Asus or a Surface laptop. I don't think I'm going to go Surface Pro.
Starting prices on X Elite coming in around $1299. X Plus around $999.

Literally the LEAST exciting part of this is talking up all the AI stuff. Instead, Windows Laptops are about to get a LOT more powerful while using a LOT less battery.

Now I just need to see what company is using which "flavor" of Qualcomm chip before I pull the trigger on one...

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

Blergh. Now we're got to figure out which "flavor" of X Elite chip is going to each laptop manufacturer.
Even more annoying that Microsoft is again naming their chip something different.

Other manufacturers will have X Elites called:
X1E-84-100
X1E-80-100
X1E-78-100

Microsoft will have the X Elite "C12". This is so dumb.

How much we wanna bet MS is using the lowest end chip in one of the most expensive Windows 11 laptops built around this chip?

@pak0st I think the Thinkpads will probably be first in line for folks getting Linux installed.
