Mapping Sydney’s Microclimates to Combat Impacts of Rising Heat

200 bespoke temperature gauges have been strategically positioned across to accurately measure local heat island effects and help prepare the community for hotter summers.

The City of Sydney has set a goal to be net zero by 2035. It aims to increase tree canopy cover to 27%, and green cover to 40% by 2050.

“Sydney is one of the most liveable cities in the world but we need to prepare now for our future climate so we can all adapt and thrive.”

#3GoodThings

  1. Garden providing plenty for daily green salads, despite summer heat & humidity.

  2. Australian Native plants thriving in the same super humidity!

  3. Wild birds coming out to sing & play today, after yesterday’s extreme heatwave.

An electrical appliance in our kitchen refused to work for several days.

When all attempts to fix it had failed, we somewhat reluctantly acknowledged the presence of the Trickster archetype, which has the power to disrupt or ‘overthrow programs’ (according to Jung and Campbell).

The appliance now works.

Caution: Individual results may vary, (as they say on TV).

To further enrich local #Wildlife #Habitat, we managed to drag ourselves away from #Summer frivolities long enough to plant out a few more #Australian #Natives.

On the theme of #Flowers, we’ve adopted our winged friends’ philosophy: there’s no such thing as too much colour!

Grevillea Yamba Sunshine (Proteaceae – Spider Flower) Large, soft yellow flower spikes appear throughout the year, attracting native wildlife, bees, nectar-eating birds and butterflies. This tough native shrub to small tree is drought and frost tolerant. Native Australian birds, especially Lorikeets, absolutely love it. An ideal plant for supporting a variety of wildlife. Image source: Dave’s Garden, ‘Living off the Edge’.
Blueberry Ash - Elaeocarpus Prima Donna (Elaeocarpus reticulatus Sm.) Masses of small pinkish flowers are arranged in rows along the branchlets of this large coastal bush or small rainforest tree. Their fruit is a stunning shade of bright blue, resembling small olives. They attract birds like the Regent Bowerbird that collect them for their blue colour. Other birds that eat these fruits are Wonga Pigeons, Crimson Rosellas, Figbirds, White Headed Pigeons and Olive-backed Orioles. Image source: Darinyun
Green Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet upright form) This tall, upright subtropical understory plant has large deep green leaves and pink and white bicolour shell-like flowers with golden centres. In full bloom, the inside of the flower is a fiery explosion of hot red and electric yellow. These especially beautiful flowers are pollinated by bees, birds and fruit bats. Highly aromatic, the blooms are also used for essential oils. Image Source: Katie Hess, flower alchemist

Many of us are still on holidays here in #Australia (Silly Season/Summer Vacation). It’s a dreamy time-out-of-time when we’re collectively cushioned by the Australian cultural tradition that nothing very serious is likely to happen in this country until after Australia Day/Invasion Day (January 26th).

I’m celebrating this special time when everyone — from businessmen, to grandmothers, hipsters and their children — has the freedom to wear board shorts and thongs (flipflops) while sauntering along the main street, eating in cafes, meandering down to the creek for a swim, or strolling to the beach.

To my fellow time-warpers, Happy Summer!

Oli Update - under the stormy conditions of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race:

"It's bouncy conditions, but we've got a bit of breeze and we still have the fleet in sight."

Sylph VI was on the fourth start line, furthest back. But this meant they had less of the spectator craft to negotiate.

What of his historic fellow crew member, the first cat to sail to Hobart?

"Oli has crashed out on the starboard settee, with his head on the pillow — he looks very peaceful," Skipper Bob Williams said.

We live under the flight path of wildlife traveling between native forests in . At midsummer, these creatures are all very busy feeding on, pollinating, propagating (through excreting seeds), and regenerating not only the great native forests, but many private gardens.

Why not give your local native birds and wildlife a gift for by planning now to plant edible native flowers, shrubs and trees wherever you live. Or find a Bush Regeneration group to work with on local public lands.

Before long, Value will become a measurable contribution to the value of both public and privately owned land, including yours. It’s the beautiful gift you give to yourself, your children’s children, our wildlife, and the planet.

Festive Midsummer Resident #2 Native Frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum), a rainforest tree native to New South Wales, Queensland and New Guinea. Their highly fragrant flowers (similar to plumeria) attract native birds, bees and butterflies. A cluster of five-petalled native frangipani blossoms, shades ranging from creamy white to yellow to pale orange, are seen against a green leafy background.
Midsummer Visitors #3 The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) is a large white parrot. It has a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. Sexes are similar, although the female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). This is a noisy and conspicuous cockatoo, both at rest and in flight. They feed on Berries, seeds, nuts, and fruit, and live long lives of between 40 – 100 years. An adult cockatoo with wings outstretched feeds a younger family member as they perch together on the mottled grey trunk of a gum tree.

The magenta lilly pilly is a rainforest tree with a total population of around 1,200 plants spread across a narrow 400 kilometre stretch of coastal NSW.

Plants produce white flower-clusters at the end of each branch between November and February. Its bright pink edible fruit is dispersed by flying foxes and rainforest birds. Luckily, we have a beautiful mature specimen growing in our backyard. It’s flowering now, so the fruit is still coming.

But, as a summer desert for a festive family feast this weekend, we had similarly flavoured marinated and chilled Australian bush plums with frozen meringue crumbled on top. 🍨
