One day I will learn to do one thing at a time... until then, I'm working in C#/.NET, curious about #MobileLlinux, finishing a PhD in #physics, training to be a local #preacher in the #Methodist #church, enjoying #crafts, #music and having lots of fun ;) Living in #Glasgow #Scotland. she/her

Looks like I'll shortly need to decide what OS to put on my 16 :)

Likely I'll go back to , but I'm tempted to try for the first time. I do need to be able to install zoom though, which looks like it might be a challenge on alpine?

We need a movement for conscientious objection to ReCaptchas. I don’t want to be forced to participate in training machine learning models to identify sidewalks, crosswalks, buses and cars in order to go about my daily life digitally.

I don’t want driverless cars on my city streets. I don’t believe the fiction that this technology will ever be safe.

I do not consent to using my own cognitive labor to train the models that will mow down people on foot or bikes later with no accountability.

@Ralph058

I don't drive, I typically ride a bike. I rather suspect I'm an edge case to driverless car software. It's not a comfortable place to be when the potential consequences are so severe.

🎙️ had an amazing time talking to @pocketvj in postmarketOS podcast E39:

  • 1.5 years of traveling the world on bike 🚲
  • hacking
  • Flashing OP6 in a tent
  • Coding on the phone while hitchhiking
  • Video editing on pinephone pro
  • Using OCR to copy text to clipboard
  • Using LLMs as offline internet
  • Dealing with large parts of the internet being censored
  • Getting rid of almost everything
  • Taking things for granted

#AskFedi

I'd like to make some maps to understand who can access a particular location by public transport.

I'm imagining specifying a small area and drawing all the public transport lines that intersect that area. Bonus points if I can filter by timetables - it's for church and Sunday timetables are a pain.

Can code something if needed but I've not worked with map data before. All ideas welcome :) tyvm!

Having made a perfectly good notes app as a single-page, hosted-for-free web app, I now wonder what else could be done like this and what would be a great additional enabling tech.

I still really want a personal, private, key-value store with a simple REST API.

If people could have this then all sorts of stuff would be possible with super-cheap web apps.

And I wonder if things like this exist. But it’s SO hard to find them. Because nothing is simple. Everything is made over-complicated!

RadtkeJCJ,
@RadtkeJCJ@fosstodon.org avatar

@ross this is interesting - is the point that you don't need to host them yourself, since they work primarily locally and don't need lots of server resources?

I have been playing with yunohost for selfhosting which is pretty simple but requires a bit of work. I host a few tools that work along the lines you're describing, like a QR code generator for my friend who makes a lot of posters. I'd love to learn to build such things myself :)

@ross nice! I didn't know about those services. I'm very much a desktop developer, never really done anything web-based. I shall go read your post :) thank you!

We--my partner, my kid, and I--have 2 days left to decide whether said kid stays enrolled at her neighborhood elementary school or enrolls in a specialized gifted education program that offers services she very much could use in a different school.

There are pros and cons. But the thing I can't get over is that the other school--the only place in the whole district where these services are offered--is in a no walk/no bike zone. As in kids are literally banned from & there.

@DrTCombs how horrible - I honestly can't wrap my head around it :/ is there a school bus at least ? Otherwise how can the kids get there ?

RadtkeJCJ,
@RadtkeJCJ@fosstodon.org avatar

@DrTCombs Road rage sounds like the expected outcome of such a system :/ the idea that no child could realistically get themselves to school (once old enough) seems miserable

It's my belief that if an electronic device needs replacing within four years—for any reason—it was defective from the beginning.

RadtkeJCJ,
@RadtkeJCJ@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon I wouldn't go quite as far as any reason - I'm clumsy enough to break things in quite unreasonable ways - but I do agree with you. Things need to be designed to account for reasonable use and repair. @WeAreFairphone know this :)

I was annoyed recently when my old fan heater broke - I couldn't even open it up because it required two different screwdrivers. No apparent reason for it.
