I see the first leader’s debate in the UK is to feature only Sunak & Starmer. No other Party leaders allowed. I know the UK electoral system is designed to keep 1 of the 2 major parties in power, but voters are sadly short-changed by the media pushing this idea so blatantly.
Voters in Scotland, NI & Wales deserve better than this.

With all the contradictory & often incoherent comments about their National Service policy we’re hearing from various Ministers & MPs, I get the feeling the didn’t really think through their wonderful new idea.

Wes Streeting: Cultural rot means NHS puts itself before the public

NO. If you means some managers in a ‘reformed system’, instigated by the Tories and pushed hard by Labour maybe. What will increased privatisation do?

#NHS #UkPolitics #LabourCorruption #PowerSeaking

RabBrucesSpider1,

@Wen I’m beginning to wonder whether he’s actually used the NHS recently. He seems to be talking about a very different organisation to the one I’ve experienced at first hand. Mind you, I use NHS Scotland, so perhaps it is different.

BBC Scotland don’t seem to have noticed this statistic from the Census. National identity is becoming more entrenched in Scotland, but a significant majority see themselves as Scottish, not British.

RabBrucesSpider1,

@Wen All joking aside, that’s the logical next step after this rhetoric. Fortunately, it’s a very big step to take, and I doubt the Tories will have time before the General Election. But if they win …

This is a good piece from the ever-excellent Marina Hyde. Here, she skewers the Tories once again, this time on their bleating over having to comply withtheir own laws.

Dunno which Churchill he's talking about. How is this guy still considered a historian??

David Starkey: "When human rights were invented by Churchill, they were intended to protect the individual against the state. The left has redesigned them to protect minorities against the majority."

RabBrucesSpider1,

@fkamiah17 The fact that he thinks Churchill invented human rights shows how poor a historian he is. But he’s always been more interested in promoting British exceptionalism than actual history. I recall once reading him pontificating about “Lesser nations” like Canada. For me, that was when he blew his cover masquerading as a historian.

This is how the in works. The headline & article are factually correct, but there is no mention that trains in Scotland are unaffected except for cross-border services. trains will run normally, but people who only read headlines will not realise that. I recently spoke to someone who was convinced trains were on strike because of a similar headline a few weeks ago.

Starmer cited in The Observer: the Tories lack "faith in the strength of British national identity [sic] to “withstand discussion”, and this has weakened the Tories’ claim to patriotism.

"In a [Telegraph] opinion piece published ahead of St George’s Day, Starmer spoke of his “pride and gratitude” at being English."

#NHSScotland really is terrific. Just 6 weeks after breaking my arm, I was expecting to receive a letter giving me an appointment for physio at the hospital. But I’ve just had a phone call from Community Physio advising that they can do a home visit since I’m blind. Not only that, they’ve had a cancellation so can come out today. Utterly brilliant.

PS. I expect a lot of pain, but it should be worth it to get full movement back.

PPS. Don’t believe all the negative spin about our NHS.

RabBrucesSpider1, to random

Well, what do you know? Despite all the negative press, mostly inspired by Tory propaganda claims, Scotrail is one of the best performing rail operators in the UK. It may be a low bar, but it seems our network is not as bad as the media would have us believe.

Here on Mastodon, it’s a lot better, so thanks to everyone who makes this a more inclusive place.
But there’s still room for improvement as some folk still don’t seem to know about image descriptions. If you add pictures to a post, please add an Alt Text image description so visually impaired screen reader users can understand the point you are making. Thanks.

RabBrucesSpider1, to journalism

A Tory-inspired headline doing the rounds of the UK media in Scotland.
Note that the number of train cancellations is actually lower than the figure for the last year prior to nationalisation despite an increase in the number of trains running.
Also, keep in mind that most cancellations are due to track or signalling failures which #Scotrail does not control.
Remember that the #media will always promote the #Tory agenda. Don’t fall for it.

Once in a generation is cry from people who do not want another Scottish independence or Brexit referendum.
Yet it has never made any sense. Parliament is never confined in what laws it can pass by previous Parliament. Even idea of a generation is nonsense. The people of Scotland been asked opinion on union once in 317 years. That is some generation. The English have never been asked.
Once in a generation is a concept used to deny us democratic choice.

RabBrucesSpider1,

@Hadenuff @IndyRichard I agree. Unfortunately, the Scottish Government’s original white paper on indy, drafted by Nicola Sturgeon, mentions “Once in a generation” several times. It gave the Unionists an easy tagline to throw back at the Yes movement. It’s about as enforceable as Boris Johnson’s “Die in a ditch” remark, but that won’t stop them spouting it at every opportunity.

I’m just back from hospital where I had a follow-up appointment after my fall last week. I was in & out in just over an hour, including X-ray, meeting Consultant & examination. Every single member of staff was wonderful. Don’t let the media convince you that #NHS #Scotland is a disaster. It is precious.
