Such a great trend to see in the ChemEd community! Atkins is a great writer 📓🧪

Any VT-NMR experts here? I’m having trouble with losing my lock signal in DMSO above 35 ºC. Using a regular NMR tube w/ septum on top. No spinning.

We're using a Bruker Fourier 300, quite a basic NMR, which is often fiddly to lock anyway (lock is slow, flock is fast but erratic - TopSpin 3.x)

Any tips? Narrower tubes? Leave it unlocked? (Expt only takes about 3 mins - gradshim at each temp) Thx!

Sometimes I worry about the state of the world and AI taking over all of our jobs. And then I look at my Amazon order's delivery route.

Goal: UK > Ohio, USA.

Current progress:

  • Heathrow
  • Chicago
  • San Francisco (!)
  • Aukland, New Zealand (!!)

I think we're safer than we think ✈️🤖🤡

@SinclairSpeccy I'm guessing maybe it was due to this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Australia#Special_events

Looks like several states changed to daylight saving time a few months early for the Olympics that year! :)

Oh wow—it's already been a year since I joined Mastodon! Such a nice place to hang out. Thank-you to @dsrudmann for the suggestion, and thanks to @trumpet for running the server! 🙏

I invite chemists and material scientists to laugh derisively at the imprecision of the highlighted phrase. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-10-11/fake-parts-found-on-boeing-airbus-jets-plague-airlines

@glennf So, somewhere between –39 ºC and 3407 ºC then, eh? https://www.angstromsciences.com/melting-points-of-elements-reference #Chemiverse

TIL that gold bars are prominently stamped with traceable serial numbers.

In unrelated news, I will no longer be accepting gold bars as payment for bribes. I apologize for any inconvenience.

QuantumDot2,
@QuantumDot2@mas.to avatar

@mattblaze On the other hand, a $100 bill has a volume of ~1 cm³, resulting in a “value density” of $100/cm³. In comparison, gold has a density of 19.32 g/cm ³ and a price of ~$61.62/g, giving rise to a “value density” of $1200/cm³.

I think I'll take the gold bar. :) Food for thought though!

I have no idea if this is really Matt Groening or not, but I found this on a lab door in 1994 and did the whole N+1 xerox-of-a-xerox thing. 🤣

@ivory I keep “missing" the star button on macOS Ivory these days. Was the click-zone tightened up in the last update? 😀

Clicking on the Star in macOS Ivory requires close attention! This video shows me missing by a few pixels and having the details screen show instead.

QuantumDot2,

@ivory Fair enough! I must just be getting worse at clicking 🤣

https://openstax.org/details/books/organic-chemistry

I find it incredible that the Organic Chemistry textbook I learnt from many moons ago in University is now freely available via OpenStax! This was the first textbook I read from cover-to-cover, devouring the problem sets at the end—and was the beginning of my love affair with the central science.

What a great boon to the chemistry education community, and a wonderful way to honor John McMurry’s son.

Nail biting that we’re still waiting to hear about replications, but the authors seem to be doubling down on their claims. Amazing if true… #Chemistry #Chemiverse

slanderoid, to Help

This might be a long shot, but we're striking out everywhere else on the internet so I thought I'd try here:

My wife bought this while thrifting yesterday. The problem is, we don't know what it is 😅 It looks like a lamp base... but I'm skeptical because there's no hole for a power cord. Could it be something else?

Also, we're curious about who made it. There is a signature but it's hard to read and googling it has been fruitless

Any help would be appreciated!

The artist's signature is painted in gold on the side. It says either "Jay H" or "Joy H" but nothing comes up when we Google either of them
The bottom is wide open. This would make sense for a lamp but, again, there's nowhere for a power cord to go through. Maybe it's missing a piece on the bottom?
The top only had this tiny hole. I suggested it could be a vase for grasses or something else narrow, but I don't have any expertise in this area 😅

@QuantumDot2@mas.to avatar

@slanderoid It looks a bit similar to the lamp listed in this Etsy store... especially if you scroll down and view the other images. (And possibly squint.) Just missing the base, and the top light fixture. https://www.etsy.com/hk-en/listing/925458024/de-lucent-china-lamp

@b0rk I noticed a small typo on your zine: the mass of a hydrogen atom is (I think!) ~ 2^–79 g (or 2^–76 kg).

Thanks for working on a cool new zine! I just bought my son a 4-pack of your print zines last night as a birthday present 🎉
