One of these shootings happened in my community. The deceased child was 13 years old, his injured sister is 16.

It's pretty hard to feel optimistic about the chances of reducing gun violence right now when there are so many out there that children can access them easily. It should not be controversial to say that kids shouldn't have access to guns.

I don’t know anything about anything but can we all agree that school buses need to have the back wheels moved back further? Just for aesthetics?

At speed the front bounces on the fulcrum of the back axle like a seesaw. I just find it very visually displeasing. Please resolve.

PeterRobison,
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

@andrew
As a kid we wanted to sit in the very back because the bus would launch you in the air when it went over speed bumps, which we thought was awesome.

In seriousness, the thing I dislike most about American school buses is the height, and relatedly, weight. Visibility on those things is famously terrible, they often have mechanical arms to make sure kids walk in front far enough away that the driver can see them. From a safety perspective, they should have snub noses and be lower.

Just a reminder that the average price of a vehicle ($48k) is close to DOUBLE the amount of minimum insurance that TN requires ($25k bodily injury, $15k for property).

As this article argues, victims of car crashes are bearing the costs of the harms caused by driving. Put another way, car crash victims are basically subsidizing car insurance and car usage in America.

This is kind of a big deal, and a good move by the Judicial Conference. Obviously, Amarillo's single sitting judge Matthew Kacsmaryk comes to mind, but it should never have been possible to pick your judge to dictate the outcome.

TIL that in 1964, Nashville cops would arrest you if you wore a Beatles wig.

From the #Tennessean:

"James Thomas Kittrell, 19, right, emerges from the Davidson County Courthouse on Feb. 16, 1964, wearing the 'Beatles wig' that led to his arrest the night before at a Stratford High School basketball game. 'The officer asked me one time to remove the wig,' said Kittrell. 'When I asked "Why?" he jerked it off my head and threw me up against a locker.'"

Here's what I learned about opening a second #Mastodon account recently:

Finding a tribe here has gotten harder. I was part of the "November 2022 rush" and it was like speed dating. A lot of my new friends didn't stick but enough did that I got traction.

What worked then doesn't work now.. at all.

So if you are a "new person" looking for interaction - #follow me and I'll follow ya back as long as you're not an incel. Tag me and I'll respond.

I still want the #fediverse to work for everyone.

I wish there was a way to indicate rough location and a mechanism to find other people in your area (if they want to be found) to connect with. I like all the Nashville and Middle Tennessee folks I've met on here, but it's a tiny fraction of the number of local people I had on twitter.

TN Republican calls Pride Flags "indoctrination," files bill to ban them in schools.

Sigh. He was just on TV talking about how "100 years ago there was consensus about what marriage is" and now there isn't. He says most people want schools to represent values of 100 years ago.

Go that? Republicans want to turn the clock back 100 years. I dunno, 1923 was a pretty wild time. I'd say they want to turn the clock back 200 years.

https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2023/12/19/tennessee-republican-files-bill-banning-pride-flags-trans-flag-schools/71815712007/

PeterRobison,
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

@Litzz11
The bill, as drafted by Rep. Gino Bulso, would ban:

  • Sports team flags
  • School flags
  • City flags
  • School system flags
  • College flags
  • POW/MIA flags
  • Military flags

It has to be broad to try to avoid showing its real purpose, which is neither content-neutral nor narrowly tailored. But that breadth will not be popular, and the attempts to narrow it will quickly illustrate the actual goal of repressing specific political messages.

TDOT will put toll roads on I-24 between Nashville and Murfreeboro, and I-65 between Nashville and Spring Hill.

But this isn't intended to improve traffic, and #TDOT offers no alternatives like buses or carpools. TDOT doesn't try to hide the fact that this is just about extracting money from drivers:

"TDOT has labeled I-24 from Nashville to Murfreesboro as their priority choice, saying it has the best chance to make the money necessary to attract a private contractor."
https://www.newschannel5.com/news/tdot-released-list-of-possible-locations-for-their-controversial-optional-toll-lanes

PeterRobison,
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

When #TDOT calls these toll sections "investments," they are really divestments—extractions of money charged on Middle Tennessee drivers. But those funds won't be used to improve Middle Tennessee roads or provide transportation alternatives. Instead, TDOT will reportedly use that money to pay for highways in other communities elsewhere in the estate that can't support the infrastructure cost.

For Middle Tennessee, these "choice lanes" (tolls) are not investment, they are extraction.

PeterRobison,
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

@Litzz11
It occurs to me that wealthy folks are typically able to buy homes close to where they work, they don't have the 1+ hour commutes to Murfreesboro or Spring Hill. Nashville's housing prices have forced people to "drive until they qualify," to pay for a home with hours out of their day. And now that deal just got worse.

(I'm not against tolls to encourage transportation alternatives, but I don't think this plan makes sense, it ignores the underlying funding issues.)

PeterRobison,
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

@ramsey
Well, the stated goal is just to raise revenue to benefit rural areas that can't support their own sprawling infrastructure, so I don't think reducing traffic was ever a goal. In that respect, the governor is getting exactly what he wants.

PeterRobison,
@PeterRobison@nashtodon.com avatar

@ramsey
You may be right, I don't know. But I bet the governor's advisors have concluded that it's a savvy political move to make urban voters subsidize rural voters.
