Mustbetuesday, to iPhone

I've had this ongoing problem with my phone for quite a while (iOS 17.1.2, though it happened with iOS 16 as well), and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to fix it.

My phone corrects or changes a word two or three words back. For example, if I type "drop off prescription," it's correct after I type "drop off," but once I've typed "prescription," it changes the entire phrase to "stop of prescription." Or if I type "thank [name]" (as a reminder to myself), it's correct after I type "thank", but once I've typed the name it changes it to "thanks [name]".

I've tried turning off a bunch of settings related to autocorrection, but I haven't found the right setting yet.

Something I’ve been pondering. One of the biggest advice you get on the Fediverse is to use Hashtags in your posts. But hashtags don’t federate unless the posts do, so if you’re on a small or single user instance, hashtags won’t do much for you. If I search for I will get a completely different set of posts than a bigger instance like mastodon.social might. If you have a hashtag for your AMA for example, or for your show, or your research, simply using a hashtag won't help and you're much more likely to get responses from big instances. Even if someone on mastodon.social posts with , as long as nobody from the cave is following them, we won't get it. We used to use fedibuzz to kinda get around this, but that no longer works. Am I the only one who thinks this is very unfortunate and makes using hashtags to organize quite a lot less useful? How many people even know this is how it works? Do I even have it correct?

Mustbetuesday,

@talon I might be missing something but I feel like this is a feature and not a bug. You can decide what size of instance you want to join, so in this way you influence how much attention you get when you use hashtags. Like, if you don't want to be overwhelmed by lots of random strangers replying to your post, you can join a small instance, but if you want to have a big audience, you can join a big instance. That is, if I'm understanding correctly.

Mustbetuesday,

@talon Oh I see! Thanks for explaining

I added a duolingo widget to my home screen, and the owl getting angrier and redder over the course of the day has been very effective at getting me to use the app. Is there a similarly pushy water reminder app? They're all so calm and gentle and blue lol. I want an angry fish to glare at me from a widget until I tell it I've had water.

Mustbetuesday,

@daisy Oh no! 😅

I wonder how long I sat here squinting and trying to lean in such a way that the sun wouldn't be in my eyes before I actually got up and closed the curtain. I didn't even notice I was doing it lol!

Japanese maples and pines, yesterday at Heirin-ji Temple :momiji:

This is my fourth (maybe fifth?) year going back to Heirin-ji to see the fall colours. Because of the long summer I waited a few weeks longer than usual, wasn't sure if I would get the timing right, but it worked out well. It was a lovely cold day.

Mustbetuesday,

@brook lovely!

I'm sure lots of other keyboards do this, but one thing I really like about my new keyboard is that it's really easy to switch it off whenever my cat is about to lie on it, so all the pressed keys don't affect what's happening on the computer. When I bought it I didn't think the power switch would be one of its best features lol. (It's an 8BitDo Retro Keyboard.)

Mustbetuesday,

@brook I really like it! I set the macro keys to switch between languages and between kana/romaji, very convenient because I could never remember those hotkeys lol :)

Spooky Halloween shirt complete!

Husband has always fancied a proper cool Halloween shirt, so I picked this fabric in secret and banned him from the sewing room until it was complete.

I could only afford the absolute bare minimum yardage, and didn't have much control over pattern placement (also no room for cutting errors, eek!)

But it all worked out and as of tonight he's seen it and tried it on and appears to love it. All good!

I will get proper posed photos at some point but for now here it is on my decidedly more curvy dress form!

Main annoyance is that my topstitching is a bit wonky, and I'm normally pretty good at topstitching. Oh well.

Root beer isn't very common in Japan, it's a novelty item offered by import stores etc.

When we first moved to our neighbourhood 4 years ago, I spent a lot of time walking around exploring the area, and discovered a vending machine nearby that sold root beer.

I bought one there once or twice, but it's not on a route I normally walk, I haven't seen it in years, and I'd forgotten what street it was on. Recently I scoured my old phone photos to see if I could find a picture, but no luck.

Today, unrelated, I was looking for the old used Nintendo DS I got from a recycle shop for ¥300. Another object I haven't seen in years, but I'm quite certain exists. I once again scoured my old phone photos for evidence of what it looks like, and clues to where I might have put it.

I did find photos of it and, reminded of what it looked like, I turned around to look at where I would probably keep it. Lo and behold, it was in the first place I looked and missed it, stacked below some game boxes.

Not only that, but I glanced at the other photos in the same directory, and the very first photo in the directory was the root beer vending machine I had been looking for, and voila, I looked up the location from the GPS coordinates in the file.

There's no point to this story, I just wanted to share my accomplishments for the day.

Mustbetuesday,

@brook I like this story! It seems like you use your photos for a lot more useful stuff than I do. :)

Several months ago I ordered a Chompi sampler looper thing, and it should arrive in two more months. I don't usually back kickstarters I'm actually excited about and I'm not used to waiting! I'm so excited and impatient!

I’ve got four songs on Bandcamp! They’re folk rock and some of them are funny! You can get all of them for only a few dollars Canadian! All proceeds go to the artists today, not to bandcamp!

I saw a lot of deserved trashing of Patreon's new logo but I've seen less discussion noticing the site itself sucks now. Everything's a deeply ugly beige now. The chronological feed is now completely gone and the front page is a totally useless view where it shows you three posts from each page you follow, even if some of the people you follow haven't updated in months. There's an absolutely awful, un-customizable "notifications" view which shows the exact same information as your front page

Mustbetuesday,

@mcc I agree with all your criticism, but I think you must have a bug, because my notifications page is showing recent posts regardless of creator, not three per creator.

Mustbetuesday,

@mcc oh I see! What a pain! I sent feedback that the recent page is no longer showing recent posts in order, and they wrote back saying they might not be able to reply because they’re getting so much feedback right now.

gettingunstuck, to productivity

Hi everyone, would you be so kind and share some things that help you move forward if you feel stuck? It could be an idea, an app, an image, a song, an action or whatever else gets you moving.

Don't hesitate to share things that seem too easy or trivial to you. They might be the biggest aha-moment for someone else.

If you find this helpful, please consider boosting for wider reach.

Mustbetuesday,

@gettingunstuck

I came up with this mnemonic to help me when I'm overwhelmed by my to do list: 1 SODA.

1 - One thing at a time.
S - Size - Make the task smaller.
O - Obstacle - Why have I not already done the task?
D - Daily limit - How much can I actually do in a day?
A - Aim - Why do I want to do the task?

I have another mnemonic for days when I've slept in really late and feel like I don't have time to get anything done: DISCARD. This is to tell me what tasks I should do.

D - Deadlines.
I - Interests.
SC - Self care.
A - Appointments.
R - Rest.
D - Delegate everything else.

In addition, I have a set of index cards I can look at that say the following:
If I'm in pain, take a pain killer.
If I don't have a to do list, write a to do list.
If I'm not motivated to tidy, take before and after pictures.
If loud sounds are distracting, try ear plugs or white noise.
If I'm super bored, try a change of scenery.
If I can't focus on a manual or repetitive task, listen to music.
If the computer is distracting, turn off the computer.
If there's no urgency to a task, make a short deadline or set a timer.
If I know what to do but can't get started, try accountability. (Body doubling, Focus Mate.)
If there are too many tasks to focus, write just one task on a sticky note and set a timer.
If I'm tired and groggy in the morning, drink caffeine.
If I'm looking for something to do, stand up and look around (not at the computer.)

I switched my watch face to that cute Snoopy one with all the animations, and it’s a lot of fun but it distracts me from actually looking at the time!

If part of your job involves waiting for your computer to do things (eg exporting video) but you’re hesitant to use your computer for something else during that time for cpu reasons, do you charge your employer for the waiting time?

Mustbetuesday,

@brook That's helpful, thank you!

Mustbetuesday, to VideoGames

I want more games that I can play one handed while only half paying attention (ie while eating). My main ones are Hearthstone and Clue (both turn based). Does anyone have good suggestions? :)

(Puzzle games like sudoku are okay but not ideal for this purpose, because all the entertainment is from my own thinking, not from stuff I can watch on screen, if that makes sense.)

Mustbetuesday,

@natknight Thank you so much for the suggestions! Those both look cute! :)

You've been traveling for a while as a soft rain wanders in from far away. You've been looking for an excuse to take a rest, and this seems like a perfect opportunity. Finding a secluded part of a gentle stream, you sit down and relax into the small, yet inexplicably large, natural phenomenon. You've always wondered why they call this place the elementals delight as, just in that moment, a sound and a water spirit appear out of the storm and momentarily join forces, surrounding and shielding you from the water from overhead. They share this moment with you for a while before parting ways with you, floating off into the cool afternoon.

Mustbetuesday,

@talon Wow this is so lovely and relaxing! I love it!
