Not being responsible for negotiating a contract and publicly defending an obscene waste of public money during a cost of living crisis are very different things

@luciedigitalni I think the lede got buried. Services Australia, an organisation who by definition don't want to be in the media, have over 200 media and comms staff.

That's the obscene bit.

I wonder who this is supposed to appeal to. Probably voters too old to have to do it, I suppose.

British PM Rishi Sunak announces plan to bring back mandatory national service - ABC News

@timrichards I said the same thing - appeals to older voters who thinks gen Z is too self centred and the righteous right.

MrAndrewD,

I ordered 3 of the exact same T-shirt from Target - and they're sending them as three separate parcels from three separate stores. Hmm OK, maybe not that efficient...

MrAndrewD,
@MrAndrewD@aus.social avatar

@timrichards Early this year I ordered 24 t shirts for an event from a screen printing company. First 4 came in seperate boxes. Then 9 in another box (all boxes were the same size). Then 4 in another box, and 7 in the final box.

Compensation for delayed and cancelled flights: Australians treated badly compared to US and Europe

(maybe paywalled) https://www.smh.com.au/traveller/travel-news/australian-airline-passengers-are-being-treated-like-mugs-20240510-p5jcme.html

MrAndrewD,
@MrAndrewD@aus.social avatar

@timrichards On a simple level, yes, penalizing a company for their issues needs fixing.

But at a deeper level, who ends up paying? It won't impact an airlines bottom line, they'll just jack up ticket prices and use that extra money to pay out the delay compensation fee.

Sure, it might motivate them to "try harder" to avoid paying out, but airlines already try to avoid delays - it's not in their interests to have them.

Will they have spare pilots on standby or looser rostering?

A spare plane/more maintenance staff/more parts at key locations?

I doubt it.

So, no, I'd prefer a lower ticket price and to take my chances on an airline doing the best they can.

With about one month to go before the , @codysimpson is nearly in the homestretch to make the trek to Brisbane. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear less from him over the coming weeks as he perhaps gets "sequestered", to some degree. But, based on how active he was prior to Commonwealth, there's no guarantee about that happening.

MrAndrewD,

@wpgne That would be Australian, not Austrian?

"This is the problem with journalists and editors covering national security who rely heavily on the national security establishment, including hangers-on, thinktankers and various experts who make a good living as rent-a-quotes on security matters. When coverage is dictated by narratives such as the China obsession that dominates Nine newspapers’ view of the world, the real story goes missing."

@luciedigitalni It's also a self feeding circular eco system. By talking up the issues, they get government "investment", which enables them to do more, investigate more and "talk" more, which feeds into the start of the cycle, albeit with a louder volume.

Today's historic #photo of the day: Melbourne SW5 class #tram no 764 running a cross-suburban route 82 Moonee Ponds to Footscray trip is just one stop from its destination as it heads east along Hopkins Street and is about to turn right into Leeds Street, Footscray, Vic, December 31 1985.

No 764 was one of 120 W5 class trams built between 1935 and 1939.

MrAndrewD,

@railmaps Route 82 allegedly runs there, although true public transport users doubt the existence of any tram route which doesn't enter the CBD.
