I understand the desire to use #AI to outsource aspects of music creation in which one finds themselves inadequate. But I think to completely outsource these other creative tasks to an algorithm robs one of either the experience of collaborating with other humans, OR the satisfaction of having improved one's skills. 3/

Plus, as I've written about before, #AI has no tastes or preferences. It can't determine if the #music or #lyrics it's created are GOOD or appropriate. It has no emotions or experiences, so it can't gauge whether it has simulated those to a human's satisfaction.
Ultimately, a human must still determine what to use and what to discard based on their human tastes, preferences, experiences, and emotions. 4/

I have no indications that I give any kind of #MusicLessons, yet I have mostly guys asking if I could give them lessons.

One guy asked about acoustic #guitar lessons (“for his daughter,” lol) on Instagram, where I don’t have guitar even listed as an instrument I play, and neither of my 2 releases include #acoustic guitar.

Male #musicians, do you get women (or other guys) asking you to give lessons when you don’t advertise yourself as a #music teacher? #Musician #MusicProduction

@moira yeah I can see how more trad/folk community would be more inclined to that—getting asked about guitar lessons or another specific instrument at live performances where you’ve displayed proficiency on that instrument. Or if your social media is mostly videos/recordings showcasing your playing abilities. I just think it’s sus when I don’t have that. I’m mostly an “in the computer” producer and haven’t posted performance content, and still get asked… :welp:

By "soul" I mean your mind, will, emotions, experiences, taste, and preferences--everything that makes you who you are.

Also, making good art and recognizing good art requires having good taste, and I'm not sure that's something you can teach to AI.

Can AI make aesthetically-pleasing shit? Of course! Based on the output of thousands of human artists over hundreds of years.

But when you ask it to make something entirely new, even based on very specific directions, or even just the random roulette of gibberish commands, it STILL has to rely on and copy human artists.

AI has no framework to know if what it's creating is GOOD, or even accurate, b/c it has no preferences regarding taste or accuracy--which are so subjective when it comes to creativity.

The argument that "humans also reference/train on others' art in order to make their own, AI just does it faster and more efficiently" is not accurate, since AI is NOT processing that art and filtering it through its own subjective framework (the soul as defined above) to create a new work to express that individual's particular ideas and emotions.

This is their livelihood. Not everyone can just volunteer their time and talent for funsies. When you hire a pro, you get pro-level results. That mandolin player that worked for free b/c she was a friend? took two hours to record one song (which still cost the studio fee and my paltry fee, teaching her how to play something close enough). Whereas the pro banjo player nailed her parts, often in ONE TAKE and busted out four songs in one hour. 52/

Even so, if you don't think someone is worth what they're charging, you still pay them for their time and work. And then just...don't hire them again.
I bring this up because she told me a story of how she refused to pay the clarinetist on her last album b/c "she just showed up to record and the producer had to teach her a part, note-for-note for a jazz solo." 🚩 That's her story, anyway. But expecting session musicians to come up with their own parts is misunderstanding what their role is. 53/

For CLASSICALLY TRAINED MUSICIANS, they expect sheet music. Others just want a recording of the song and tabs. I provided tabs and my demos w/my proposed parts to all the musicians, and sheet music for the string players.

Some studio musicians can come up with their own parts but the producer is there to provide a cohesive vision, so things don't go off the rails. Pre-planning and communication is key, so everyone knows what is expected of them.
