  • JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter

    Every similar option also requires covers -- it's because all the etailers require covers for their listings.

    What are you looking for from an aggregator? Are you planning on putting the stories up on etailers or just for your own use?

    JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter
    Public domain images for short stories works fine -- that's what most folks use as far as I can tell.
    Not sure why anyone would get mad at you about it. But if you need help with covers, I'm happy to give a hand where I can.

    JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter
    That is a very cute cat. The photo is creative commons, not public domain. So you can use it, but make sure you credit the photographer.

    The first in a series of essays on antisemitism in German folk tales.

    Feedback would be very much appreciated before I turn this into a blog post.

    JessMahler,

    @juergen_hubert
    I wasn't able to read the full thing, but the intro is solid and the first story well handled.

    My one suggestion is, if you haven't, find some sources on these stories from a Jewish perspective to include.

    If you don't know of any, I suggest Joshua Trachtenberg's The Devil and the Jews as a good starting point.

    Most find/replace can match case, but you need to tick the check box or something. The details depend on the specific program of course.

    @weirdwriter You asked me to let you know when the new website was done?

    Honestly, it's still a work in progress but it's fully functional now and all the 'loren ipsum' is cleared out.'

    if you don't mind, I'd really like your take on how screenreader friendly it is -- every test we've run says it's good but I worry about how 'busy' it is and the new wordpress block system just seems inherently unfriendly to me.

    New website set up is going well, even if I hate wordpress' new site editor.

    Using buffer for steady, frequent posting has been more stress than return. I'm glad I tried it, and I'll still be using buffer a bit, but probably dropping back to the free version and a lot fewer scheduled posts.

    Simiarly, monthly promos haven't been a good return on effort, so I'll cut back to the three-times-a-year Smash sales and maybe a once a year membership sale for the Aerie.

    I have some ideas -- and many thanks to @weirdwriter for getting me thinking outside of social media for the first time in a while. I'm going to take a month or so to do some research and make some plans and see what I can come up with.

    Definitely going to be looking more into the webring idea. Do some searching to see if any of the old webrings survived or anyone else has gotten some new ones going.

    JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter
    I'd love WooCommerce but last I checked I can't afford their fees. Looking at DriveThruFiction and itch.io as possible other platforms to sell through. That's too bad about Gumroad, they were on my to-look at list too.

    Damn but some people are just extra about being shitty.

    I've got an epic fantasy in the brainstorming/research stages, original world, main character is an Isekai'd Jewish woman, main culture is semi-nomadic horse culture, mainly modeled off of Great Mongol Nation circa Chinggis Khan and Empire of Iran and non-Iran circa Khusrau the Just.

    I'm especially interested in sensitivity take from a Mongolian person because I know a lot of traditional culture survives there and don't want to accidentally be an ass or appropriate, but someone familiar with both cultures would be awesome, or worst case someone from other horse and/or nomadic cultures to look for general problems.

    Estimated time: 2-3 hours.
    Estimated budget $40.
    Estimated deadine: 3 months.

    Boost pls

    Thinking about starting a #Podcast where volunteers describe media covers, like book covers or movie covers or similar, including music album covers. Could even have creators on as guests to describe covers but I'm far too broke for podcast hosting!

    JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter @SeaMonster
    Asking as a self-pupped author -- would it be helpful to have a cover description as part of the book description on ebook listings?

    (Audiobooks are on my to-do list, but probably next year before I start working on that.)

    JessMahler,

    @UnCoveredMyths @weirdwriter @SeaMonster @bookstodon

    In the ebook itself is a good idea. I just said the other day about needing to start adding blurb in the beginning so folks would know what the book is about. I'd add the alt text to the same section.

    It is possible to add actual alt text to ebook images, but automated ebook converters don't have a way to do it and doing a self-conversion is a guarenteed way to get dinged by ePubCheck.

    JessMahler,

    @UnCoveredMyths @weirdwriter @SeaMonster @bookstodon

    An idea for something on a mass appeal level --

    How about getting a hashtag going? If enough of us start using it at once, paired with # Am Writing or # AmReading and # DisabilityPrideMonth or something, might catch on.

    Say # AltTextCovers

    If we coordinate to start posting (say next monday - July 17th) and reach out to friends/mutuals who'd support in the meantime, we could get some real traction going.

    Spend a week posting about it to get attention interest (Next Monday is # AltTextCover day, we all know how important alt text is here, but did you know most ebook covers never have alt text? Next monday post the alt text of your books / your favorite books.

    Reply to this post if blind and vision impaired folks can DM you for help getting alt text of their fave book covers to post.)

    (edited for CamelCase and consistent hashtags. Sorry.)

    JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter @UnCoveredMyths @SeaMonster @bookstodon
    Someone posted about them recently, but it wasn't me. I haven't used any for a few years.

    I've used both buffer and coschedule and been happy until my twitter exceeded their free limits. Was thinking of getting one or the other going again on here.

    JessMahler,

    @weirdwriter @UnCoveredMyths @SeaMonster @bookstodon

    Just took a look, CoScheduler doesn't sync w/ fedi on the free account, Buffer says it will but doesn't like my home instance.

    Day 29 – How would you feel if your book got banned?

    Arguably it has been?

    B&N, Kobo, Apple, Tolino, and Vivlio have all refused to sell Bound by His Oath because of erotic (BDSM) content.

    Which wouldn't put me in a royal fucking rage if these SAME stores didn't sell 50SofG, Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty and a dozen dozen other far more 'extreme' stories.

    I have rants about this. I have many, many, MANY rants about this and the larger issue it is part of.

    I am denied access to some of the biggest sales outlets on the internet because I call a rose a rose and a whip a whip and don't try to pretend rape, stalking, and abuse are 'romantic.'

    Because I don't have a big publisher behind me and don't get an individual hearing, just a quick automatic filter.

    My books aren't for everyone, and there are some places they shouldn't be. But this is utter bullshit.

    (edited bc I got titles mixed up. Whips & Fangs has ALSO been blocked from a bunch of stores, but I don't have the list handy.)
