#WinRAR #security issue more wide-reaching than thought https://www.ghacks.net/2023/08/24/winrar-security-issue-more-wide-reaching-than-thought/ The unrar.dll and unrar64.dll files, which are widely used by 3rd-party software, may or may not also be affected. I found extremely old versions of unrar.dll in settings or system folders from Sumatra, Balabolka, and Free Commander. It's also used in book editor Calibre, but Igor says 7-zip is not affected. #CVE-2023-40477

When I give a talk about stalkerware, two things usually happen:

One person (usually a woman) walks up to me and tells me about the stalkerware/keylogger/physical tracker a partner used to stalk them.

Another person (usually a man) tells that they didn't know about this stuff and they can't even imagine the sort of person that would use it.

JenMorency,
@JenMorency@toot.community avatar

@evacide Luckily, I grew up when HS computer class still taught how computers actually work. I always assume that my devices are being targeted - not so much by a stalker but because of my politics - and I act accordingly.

@inthehands @evacide That's something I would never ask for or provide, even if I hadn't been through three divorces by age 40. This article by a security vendor may be of interest: https://securelist.com/the-state-of-stalkerware-in-2022/108985/

I always think it’s hilarious when people are like ‘stock up on your meds’ or ‘make sure you always have a three-week supply’ my brother in Christ what fucking insurance are you on and can I get it because mine only authorizes refills PRECISELY every 30 days.

JenMorency,
@JenMorency@toot.community avatar

@fractured_void I changed pharmacies because #Walgreens strictly enforced a 30-day limit even though my actual health plan has a 28-day refill policy. I live in an area prone to seasonal flooding and have medications I MUST take every day.
