OK, #podcast listeners, help me out here... If I started a podcast of me reading some of my old #stories...

  1. Would that make you happy? Maybe happy enough to part with some coin?

  2. What would be a good title, do you think?

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore The fascinating trivia in this story, which has been set down in old old documents, is that the king in it is historical. There are accurate records of the genealogy of the Nepalese royal family.

When the Crown Prince of Nepal gunned down his mom, dad, and nine other members of the court in 2001, before shooting himself in the head, he ended the royal family… exactly ten generations after its founding.

You can thank me later.

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore You ever hear the story about the tutelary spirit of the Nepalese royal family making their founder an offer that he definitely refused?

GregStolze,
@GregStolze@writing.exchange avatar

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore Oh boy, get comfy but don’t eat anything.

AS I RECALL IT, this ancestor is kinda invading all over Nepal, subjugating some tribes, getting buy-in from others, unifying everything under his banner. He’s riding through the mountains and sees a beggar.

“Here ya go buddy,” he says, making a contribution. (Can’t remember if it was money or some food or what.)

“Thanks!” says the beggar. “Now I have something for you!”

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore The beggar proceeds to vomit into his begging bowl. “Eat my puke!” he says.

“Um… no,” says the future first king of Nepal.

“You fool! You absolute idiot! If you’d just eaten barf from me, a stranger, your family would have ruled forever! As is, I can only give you ten generations!”

Hey everybody. Once a month (or more often) I remind folks that I have a Patreon for fiction (https://www.patreon.com/GregStolze). I’m updating it soon, so if you want to sign on for $5 and get this month’s story as a BONUS, the time is now.

PENITENTIARY POOL BOY is this month’s tale, a sort of soft sequel to AFTER THE COPS. (That’s available free at http://gregstolze.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/AfterTheCops.pdf) Like the previous, it combines social SF with hard-boiled crime.

The narrator/protagonist is a newbie corrections officer in a time of sweeping prison reform. Even as his workplace struggles with becoming more humane, he’s trying to solve a mystery from inside the cells.

Just read a brilliantly structured, wonderfully composed, deeply affecting short story.

I would give it a 1% chance of ever being read by 100 people.

This collection has AFTER THE COPS, my procedural set in an America undergoing sweeping police reform! It’s got gritty dirtbag crime, both domestic and cyber! It’s got a couple funny ones and a couple tragic ones, along with a lot about aliens who either don’t know what they want or aren’t good at explaining it. It’s got time travel!

GregStolze,
@GregStolze@writing.exchange avatar

All these stories, the fruit of my decades of writing experience and paranoia-fueled creativity, can be yours for the measly price of five bucks! But… you gotta pledge.

Catching up on a missed film. M3GAN was fun! Feels a bit like a modern Chucky crossed with Ex Machina, a splash of Terminator and a few other android/AI sci-fi’s. 🤖

GregStolze,
@GregStolze@writing.exchange avatar

@blockforest Yeah, I liked it. Didn’t love it, but I remember a scene with a cop being ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. Can’t zero in on what it was, but just some line delivery that had me instantly convinced this detective was 100% useless.

GregStolze,
@GregStolze@writing.exchange avatar

@blockforest The cop bit was the delivery of “His hand was basically torn clean off. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t laugh.”

GregStolze,
@GregStolze@writing.exchange avatar

@blockforest INSTANTLY plausible that the cops weren’t gonna accomplish anything.
