As Autumn arrives, the temperature drops, & rain approaches, my thoughts turn to folktales--not sure why they're so connected to autumn for me. Katherine Langrish writes a wonderful blog. I'm especially enjoying her Enchanted Sleep and Sleepers series.

#WritersCoffeeClub 9/16. Do you have prologues in any of your writing? How do you feel about them?
I have prologues in quite a few Owen Archer mysteries & no one's ever complained. I use them when appropriate.

When I'm reading, I am perfectly happy with a prologue...and epilogue. IMHO someone needed a bone to pick for a writing advice column and chose to condemn prologues. Piffle, I say! 🧐

Did I offer to read my neighbor's daughter's romance manuscript, her first attempt at writing a book? Yes, I did. Because: 1) the delight with which the characters & conversations came to her while walking along with her 3 yr old who is fascinated by EVERYTHING in the woods where they live; 2) she owned a bookshop that hosted a writing group; 3) she's now a psychotherapist; 4) she wanted mature protagonists in romance; 5) put it away in a drawer for 6 wks, so 1st she'll edit. #writingcommunity

In the NYT:
"When [Lauren] Groff starts something new, she writes it out longhand in large spiral notebooks. After she completes a first draft, she puts it in a bankers box — and never reads it again. Then she’ll start the book over, still in longhand, working from memory. The idea is that this way, only the best, most vital bits survive."
Fascinating. I love reading about processes.

Sep 3 #WordWeavers MC POV: You realize that you are a character in a book. What do you do?

Franz-Karl, Sovereign Duke of Traventi, Unconditional Prince of Karnburg, and Heir to the Falkenburg Domains: Ask whether the particular book in question is tragedy, comedy, history, satire or biography. I believe there is also a compiled volume of sermons from one of the northern sects that dislike Elderkin that mentions me rather frequently, but as far as I know that has only happened once, so far.

#WritersCoffeeClub Sept 2: On a scale of plotter to pantser, what are you?

With the #OwenArcher series I set the season & year, find something interesting that's happening in history, then seed a problem for Owen, choose some of the cast to highlight, & set them loose. From time to time I pause to track the timeline & tweak things, jot some notes several scenes ahead (may or may not stick to these), & move on. Not sure what I'd call that, but it works for me. #writingcommunity

A friend stopped by for a walk because she had an errand in my neighborhood. A warm, late summer walk through the woods to the lake. We sat on a bench by the lagoon and talked. Small joys. #walking #friends #Saturday

I'm reading Fool's Fate by Robin Hobb, the 3rd book in the 3rd trilogy in this world, & I'm fascinated by how the intricacy of the world deepens, layer upon layer of history are revealed, connecting everything. Gradually the reader sees the enormity of what might be lost if one of the characters takes the wrong step. For me, with all that's falling apart in the world in which I live, this is a mirror to us. It’s a tale of humanity, & how we treat one another. A warning. 2/2

Charles Baudelaire's "Cats" popped up as the daily poem from The Paris Review. I laughed at the 4th line--not my Maggie! We call her The Bullet.

The fervent lovers of the austere savants
Adore, in their dotage, each of the sweet
And powerful cats, pride of the house,
Who, like them, are cautious and sedentary.

Grateful to historians for all the help I've been offered over the years. Once again, a good friend/historian has validated my doubts & corrected my course, responding swiftly & with remarkable clarity. As a novelist, no matter how strong my background & ongoing research, I cover such a broad spectrum of specialties that I could not do this without help. And it's all so fascinating. @medievodons

Plucked Fool's Fate (Robin Hobb) off my bookshelf last night. Fell right into in. I love the depth of her characterizations. A good late-summer read, heading to an icy island. #reading #RobinHobb @bookstodon

Walking with a friend this morning, I encountered this grey heron once again. She was sitting on a fallen limb in the creek, not standing on the curved trunk hanging over the water as usual, quietly enjoying the cool greenery all round. #nature #heron #creek

Two women who must not be forgotten, esp for those of us who love libraries. Tessa Kelso and Adelaide Hasse. Read how they invigorated the LA Public Library, and more! Bonus--Melvil Dewey was a serial harrasser (and very poor speller). #libraries #WomensHistory @bookstodon @writers https://bookriot.com/who-was-tessa-kelso/

I had a magical #walk this morning, my usual route, down the one lane wooded hill to the lake. I started a conversation with a neighbor walking her dog & discovered she's a steward of the creek area. We watched a young eagle eating a fish up in a cottonwood that overhangs the lake, saw 2 grey herons on the creek, I learned the names of many of the shrubs, where the turtles hang out, & the beavers...I love my neighborhood.
