I always wondered why this was not a thing, particularly when short-range heat-seakers were the best missiles on order.

How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?

Hello, I’m relatively new to self-hosting and recently started using Unraid, which I find fantastic! I’m now considering upgrading my storage capacity by purchasing either an 8TB or 10TB hard drive. I’m exploring both new and used options to find the best deal. However, I’ve noticed that prices vary based on the specific...

As you are looking for bulk data storage, the drive’s speed isn’t of too much concern. A 5400RPM drive is plenty.

If you are looking to put this drive into an array with other drives, make sure you get a CMR drive as SMR drives can drop out of arrays due to controllers finding them unresponsive. If a drive does not list it is CMR, it’s best to assume it isn’t. Seagate has a handy CMR chart, for example.

Additionally, if there are multiple spinning drives in the same enclosure, getting drives with vibration resistance is a good bonus. Most drives listed for NAS use will have this extra vibration resistance.

Unless China’s plan is for Russia to leave Ukraine, I have a strong feeling it isn’t going to work out.

In unrelated news, Russian occupied Belbek Airfield is on fire, with reported losses of Russian combat aircraft, an air-defense radar, and two S-400 anti-air missile launchers.

There is also odysee.com. I’m just glad more people are working on and joining competing platforms. Youtube’s near monopoly is not good.

From my experience, nothing. I’m not sure what the guy is complaining about.

It isn’t just students. Interest rates in general were raised from their historic lows after the 2008 recession into the 2020 recession in order to fight inflation. Debt consolidation and refinances were hot hot hot in 2020/21.

This is also why it is easy to find a savings account with 5% interest today. Something that has been unheard of for nearly two decades.

China is becoming an increasingly unreliable trade partner. Preventing them from taking over more of America’s economy is prudent.

German industry is/was in shambles as they allowed an unreliable trade partner, Russia, to completely take over a segment in the German economy (oil & gas). When that unreliable trade partner pulled the rug in 2022, suddenly Germany is paying out the ass for LNG, reducing factory output, even on-lining coal plants to keep the lights on.

It is simply a bad idea to allow an unreliable trade partner to take over a segment in your economy.

What are the most private social media platforms?

I’ve been feeling uneasy about the privacy implications of using Lemmy and similar platforms. The ability for anyone to view your entire posting history feels to me like publicly sharing my browser history. In contrast, most other social media platforms allow you to limit your feed visibility to just friends or followers....

If you have a username attached to a publicly posted comment, people will be able to see your history. The internet is forever. Publicly posted comments are, by definition, not private. Treating them as such, in any capacity, is a mistake.

The biggest thing is to not post personal details, or to even post accumulations of details over many comments that can narrow things down. The weather where you are at the time, what type of car you drive (or your lack of a car), what type of job you have, etc, etc, etc. On their own, each of these pieces of information don’t mean much, but you start putting them together and you can narrow things down considerably.

It is also not a bad idea to occasionally throw in some misinformation about yourself. Maybe you don’t drive a Corolla, but instead a Hilux.

There are lots of random assholes on the internet. I like when they are forced to stay on the internet and not able to bring their asshollery into one’s real life.

The coal companies don’t say mean words on Twitter, so clearly they are better than Tesla for the environment.

Review sites have historically been almost worthless in judging how good a game is (user reviews are where it is at). However, I’m really hoping this game is good. Homeworld 2 was great; another installment would be quite welcome.

Yeah, that suggestion is hysterically nonviable for a plethora of reasons. Even joking about that would eviscerate the average politician. Not even just the average American politician, the average European politician would get wrecked for such a nonviable idea.

What if instead the government took the equivalent amount of ownership and put them on the path to building EVs? GM could’ve been Tesla without the Musk issue.

In 2009, $/kwh prices were astronomical. There is a reason the Model 3 didn’t exist until 2017. Trying to make that car back in 2009 would have been a catastrophically awful idea.

You guys have to stop with these suicidal ideas.

BombOmOm,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

The US government forcing GM to make a $100,000 luxury EV in 2008/9 would have been so laughably bad I can’t put it into words. And yes, the $/kwh of batteries was terrible then, why do you think EVs were so damn expensive in 2009?

Study reveals "widespread, bipartisan aversion" to neighbors owning AR-15 rifles (www.psypost.org)

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that across all political and social groups in the United States, there is a strong preference against living near AR-15 rifle owners and neighbors who store guns outside of locked safes. This surprising consensus suggests that when it comes...

I would prefer my neighbor not own a subwoofer, but I’m against a subwoofer ban for a variety of reasons.

Love it.

The R-73 is pretty comparable to the AIM-9X in capabilities as it has some flare resistance, is short range, and can do off-bore shots. Though, the off bore shots require a targeting head on the boat itself, which it probably doesn’t have, they almost certainly are using the missile seeker itself as the targeting system as it is MUCH easier to implement. Meaning they likely need to point the missile roughly at the target.

This system would be most useful for taking out the choppers attacking the other suicide boats as well as sniping planes taking off/landing on coastal airstrips.

Here is my process for new cards: Pick a pricepoint, head over to Video Card Benchmark and scroll down until you find the first (ie fastest) video card that meets that price point. Also double check prices at PC Part Picker. For used cards, the chart is still pretty useful, just a bit more manual (and money saving!) to get used prices from eBay/Mercari.

I personally have an AMD bias though, since they have pulled way less shit than nVidia. But, that is your decision to make.

You are thinking of UserBenchmark, which is a stain on the PC gaming industry.
