Warning, if you currently use WordPad, you will want to back it up before upgrading to Windows 11, version 24H2. Windows 11, version 24H2 will very possibly be a build in the 26000 range.

If you're on Windows 11 22H2, today's optional update (OS build 22621.1635) brings a new option in Windows Update to get the latest features as soon as they're available, which means you will automatically receive any non-security updates. So if I'm reading it correctly, you probably won't need to press download and install anymore to get those, if you have the toggle on.

This, brought to you by me being exceptionally bored. If you want to check for updates on demand but without opening Settings (even works if you have updates paused!) just type UsoClient StartInteractiveScan into Run and it'll do it, but you might want to do it with the Windows Update page open the first time just to make sure it worked, as you'll receive no output. But then you can get even more crazy and say New>Shortcut and punch in c:\windows\system32\UsoClient.exe StartInteractiveScan, hit next, name it, hit finish, then go to properties and put a shortcut key on it! Then when you want updates or if they're paused and you want to update Defender, just hit your shortcut and you can do it automatically with one command! Really liking this new workflow. #Windows #productivity #security #updates

Things I learned about performing a Windows 11 install to avoid bloatware if anyone is interested in trying this:
You can set it to English (World) on the time and currency format dropdown in Setup (I believe this has to be when you boot straight off the media and it doesn't appear to work if you run setup.exe from within Windows and this appears to be exclusive to Windows 11).
Once you've connected to the Internet, you will not see any of the pinned tiles for apps that you do not have installed, for example, no Netflix, WhatsApp, Spottify, LinkedIn, etc.
After setup completes, however, you need to switch the region back to US and it has to be done through Settings, not the region dialog (careful observation shows that the world entry will disappear from the country or region dropdown once you switch it back so I believe it's not even supposed to exist in the first place which is where the bug is).
You will have lots of nasty consequences if you don't switch the region back such as not being able to reach the activation servers.
You will, however, still see English (world) reflected on your sign in screen but as long as everything is set to US or another (supported) region for you everything should work fine. I figured out other stuff pertaining to setup today but I need to test those more before I publicly post them. #Windows #WindowsSetup #Windows11

Me and @datajake1999 were having some fun and we did... this.

Ok so I just put in the following into the NVDA Python Console, and nearly all of NVDA's weird regressions are gone! UIAHandler.badUIAWindowClassNames = UIAHandler.badUIAWindowClassNames + ("SysListView32", "DirectUIHWND", "msctls_trackbar32",) This even makes the UAC slider track correctly.

So I really, really dislike what happened with Eloquence in iOS 16.5 beta 4. There's a reason I mentioned to take what I said before about improvements with a grain of salt. All the nice improvements I mentioned before are now gone, including: • improved reading of capitals when set to speak cap, • No more correct handling of commas, and no more smooth reading of long numbers such as 1234567890.

If you're on Windows 10 and Windows 11, I believe you can prevent some full screen suggestions such as moving to Windows 11 or the "Let's finish setting up" by turning off the suggest ways to finish setting up the device. On Windows 10, this is in Settings>system>Notifications and actions. On Windows 11, it's under Settings>System>Notifications, and you might have to expand the additional settings box. If on Windows 11 21H2, it's on the page without having to expand the box.

Feel free to boost this for wider reach. In #NVDASR it says that it supports the SuperBraille display, which is mostly available in Taiwan. I'm super curious about this display. Is there a specific reason it's mainly only available there? I find it really interesting that it has no panning keys and you have to use a physical braille keyboard to pan it. Does anyone have one of these? If so, what are your thoughts about it? #BrailleDisplays

Important note for all Windows 10 users! Version 22H2 is the final feature update of Windows 10 which will remain in support through October 14, 2025.

I have no idea where to start. A friend is on #Windows10 and cannot receive cumulative updates from Windows update and is instead always being offered Windows 11 automatically, without having to press download and install, without having to accept license terms, and with no option whatsoever to stay on Windows 10. How do we prevent 11 from showing, and have the cumulative updates show instead? The one option is to go up to 11 then immediately rollback, but I'd like to avoid having them do that if at all possible and I'm not sure that changing BIOS settings is much of an option either. My guess is that kb4023057 was probably the culprit, but I have no idea (it probably modified something that's staying that way even after that update was removed). Thanks! #Windows #WindowsUpdate #WindowsIssues

I was looking at the text-only forecast for my area through the National Weather Service, and there was an image at the top, and VoiceOver said, "Domino, piano." Now I'm just picturing the people in charge of that weather report just playing dominos and a nice grand piano during their break time.

If this registry value does what I think it will, this computer is set to find a good time to restart for updates, normally it tries for 7 days, and then gives up, but apparently, I've now set it to try for 16777215 days, or about 45964 years, before it will give up. Welcome to me being bored at 2:00 AM.

In 's configuration file, you can adjust some additional parameters which don't have settings in the dialogs, such as Beep Speech Mode Pitch as well as how often progress bar updates are spoken when set to speak. However, because these settings aren't in the file by default, I don't know what their names are, and because they're not in the settings dialog, there's no way for me to adjust it to see what it's name is in the configuration file. Is there somewhere I can see a full list of valid settings for the configuration file, regardless of whether there is a corresponding setting for it in the dialogs? Thanks!

The days of always having to reboot for Windows updates on Windows 11 may be coming to an end. https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/03/04/windows-11-is-getting-rebootless-updates-with-hotpatching-feature/

I believe I figured out how Narrator reads its controls, there's a template XML file that it seems to read from.

BTyson,

For example, this controls how a checkbox is read, whether Narrator pauses, etc.

I have no interest in Windows Recall or these new AI PC's. I really hope we'll be able to continue to buy just normal AMD64 PC's. Ugh.

BTyson,

I'm also kind of feeling like Windows 11 24H2 will be a hot mess because it got pushed to the Release Preview channel today, without going through the beta channel first. Seriously, why?

BTyson,

The scary thing is that the automatic snapshots are taken every 5 seconds and the minimum amount of space you can have the recall feature use, if not disabled, is 10 GB for a 256 GB disk and 25 GB if the disk is at least around 512 GB.

BTyson,

My personal feeling is that unless you need one of the new features in 24H2, such as Sudo, or other new features I wouldn't move to it until 2025/2026.

I just ran across a funny #iOS TTS quirk. I was reading about US billionaires and I heard "microsecond billionaires" instead.

So the Bop It Extreme I have has some slight issues so I ended up getting a score of 149. It still did the normal fail sequence, not the one that has the pull command sound and the other music jingle. I think I just indirectly figured out that that one may happen at 150, as that would put you 100 away from beating it. I could be wrong, but being that it seems to happen at 170, and possibly less, and I think I saw it at 150 something, I think it could be that it does this at 150. #games
