So I know that holding control while moving in Explorer makes it more responsive, and I think I just figured out why. When a sighted user moves the mouse in Explorer to navigate the list, it never actually highlights the item until they single click on one (seen by looking at the status bar). So it just occurred to me that pressing down arrow really fast would be like a user trying to single click files really really fast with the mouse. The equivalent to the normal mouse functionality of navigating, for us, is to actually use control+arrow keys which doesn't update the highlight, which is also more responsive.

It looks like Microsoft is doing away with the Windows + C hotkey, at least in the Insider builds, both Dev and Canary. This is a large mistake. If you care I would urge you to comment to the Disability Answer Desk and other channels if you have them. 800-936-5900.

BTyson,

@JeffBishop Why is this an issue? I hate everything about copilot so am glad it's not used for that anymore.

BTyson,

@JeffBishop As a follow-up to my original reply, I feel like it's too easy to accidentally hit that key combo.

BTyson,

@JeffBishop I am. I totally recognize that some people do use that, I just have so many other concerns about Copilot. What are your thoughts on their proposed workaround? Their proposed workaround is to press windows key+the number assigned to Copilot on the taskbar, which seems fine to me, but maybe I'm missing something?

I hope everyone has a great day today! :)

BTyson,

@datajake1999 @BorrisInABox I know his Thursdays haven't always been the best but I hope this one's an exception.

So the Bop It Extreme I have has some slight issues so I ended up getting a score of 149. It still did the normal fail sequence, not the one that has the pull command sound and the other music jingle. I think I just indirectly figured out that that one may happen at 150, as that would put you 100 away from beating it. I could be wrong, but being that it seems to happen at 170, and possibly less, and I think I saw it at 150 something, I think it could be that it does this at 150.

Remember: They're not AI PCs, they're Surveillance PCs https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/112475611939997391

BTyson,

@mcc I'm just curious, but did you turn off these features through group policy?

BTyson,

@mcc That makes sense. I turned off lots of the search stuff, like web results, search highlights, etc. and it looks like the group policy's stayed the same for some time, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for it to get turned back on again.

I was looking at the text-only forecast for my area through the National Weather Service, and there was an image at the top, and VoiceOver said, "Domino, piano." Now I'm just picturing the people in charge of that weather report just playing dominos and a nice grand piano during their break time.

I have no interest in Windows Recall or these new AI PC's. I really hope we'll be able to continue to buy just normal AMD64 PC's. Ugh.

BTyson,

The scary thing is that the automatic snapshots are taken every 5 seconds and the minimum amount of space you can have the recall feature use, if not disabled, is 10 GB for a 256 GB disk and 25 GB if the disk is at least around 512 GB.

BTyson,

My personal feeling is that unless you need one of the new features in 24H2, such as Sudo, or other new features I wouldn't move to it until 2025/2026.

BTyson,

I'm also kind of feeling like Windows 11 24H2 will be a hot mess because it got pushed to the Release Preview channel today, without going through the beta channel first. Seriously, why?

BTyson,

@datajake1999 They can, but I'm not asking about it for that reason. I'm asking about it for the reason that I want to still run a specific app.

I wonder how these CoPilot+ PCS will work with gaming. I wonder if there will be high end versions for gamers, or if that will still be what x86 machines are for.

BTyson,

@mikedoise Oh so will we still be able to get regular AMD64 (64-bit) machines?

BTyson,

@mikedoise What about just like, I want to go out and buy a new computer?

I just realized that the iPhone SE battery is smaller than the Jelly Star battery. Not by much, but it is. The Jelly Star battery is half the size of almost every Android phone battery, even the cheapest Samsung phones from several years ago. So when I say Apple could have tried a little harder, I can back that up with actual examples. Hopefully the next SE has a much larger battery, or Magsafe, or both. I hesitate to recommend them to anyone at this point because you basically can't function without a power bank. Meanwhile, the Jelly Star is turning out to be an amazing media device, especially now that I figured out how to make Foobar2000 for Android more accessible.

BTyson,

@simon I'm sure it depends on how you use your phone but I've had really good success with the SE lineup, even without a power bank, when that was my main phone.

Ok, I totally understand that no one here might have the answers, but does anyone know if Cerence has released any new voices in the past year? Apple disclosed that new voices are coming to VoiceOver, and I'm trying to understand if they mean more stuff from Cerence or new voices Apple has built in house. Personally I hope it's new stuff from Apple, I'd love for them to get back into the TTS game as Alex is still one of the best voices currently available in my opinion.

BTyson,

@miki @ZBennoui I have a strong feeling one of them might be Nicky Compact (you can use it on Mac but not on iOS).

Did you know you can add up to two clocks to the clock & calendar flyout? It's an option in Date & Time Settings

BTyson,

@JenMsft What is the difference between using this option and the additional clocks tab in timedate.cpl?

My dad's out of town at the moment on a business trip, and he sent me a checklist of things I need to do to help my mom with after her surgery. He sent it as an Apple Notes link. SO to access it from my Pixel, I had to:

  1. Click the link and try to sign into my Apple ID.
  2. Get a verification code, except I have no Apple devices around at the second and the text option had to be clicked like 5 times before it worked.
  3. Verify I have... access to be invited to the note, whatever that means. SO they had to text me a link, and I had to click it.
  4. After clicking it, I had to, you fucking guessed it, sign in again, including the same problem with sending a code, even though I hit trust this browser the first time.
  5. Dismiss the 15 modals that popped up across the two tabs, and try to access the note. It doesn't work.
  6. Close the entire browser and click the link again.
  7. Finally scroll down to the notes contents, and realize that Apple really doesn't care about you, because all you can read is the first line!
Seriously, fuck, you! It feels like this entire world is now just broken, inaccessible garbage everywhere you look.
BTyson,

@TheQuinbox He way overcomplicated that. You can just share the note over e-mail.

iOS 17 added an option to import an ESim QR code from photos when adding an ESim, so that if the carrier provides the photo, we can easily add it without having to scan it from another device and line up the camera. This was a huge accessibility aid. Unfortunately, that option was removed at some point. I can no longer find it on iOS 17.4 or 17.5. I don't know why Apple would have silently taken out such a useful option, but I'm going to be e-mailing Apple accessibility because this regression hits blind people particularly hard, and it could also cause problems for someone who has only one device. By forcing us to scan using the camera, Apple is also forcing us to have a second device available to display the QR code.

BTyson,

@simon There is something in the release notes about universal eSim links. Could this be another way to work around the QR codes?

BTyson, to iOS

I just ran across a funny #iOS TTS quirk. I was reading about US billionaires and I heard "microsecond billionaires" instead.

I’m really thinking that today’s event is only half of the story for the iPad this year. I think WWDC will have some really cool iPadOS features. What do you think?

BTyson,

@mikedoise That was a waste of 39 minutes. They could've made that a press release with videos. I don't think they'll do very much in terms of features on the iPad.
