Interesting. The Nested desktop mode on the #SteamDeck has been super useful, but cannot be remoted into via #AnyDesk and the like, cos it's in #Wayland rather than #X11/#Xorg. In that case, the Deck will still require the actual Desktop mode which still does run on X11.
Watching every video promoting switching from #Xorg to #Wayland gets me moving with a plan, later only to face multiple hurdles of medium to high complexity.
I mean I've moved #distros, and switched major tools and configs, but nothing has been as intimidating as this one. Realizing how much of my setup is indirectly #Xorg-dependent, it reminds me of my move out of #SystemD in favor of #Runit.
After som struggles with the #Xorg configuration file I was able to get the #Geode driver running.
I now have X11 with twm, alsa sound and networking with OpenSSH
You may have seen the news that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 plans to remove Xorg. But Xwayland will stay around, and given the name overloading and them sharing a git repository there’s some confusion over what is Xorg. So here’s a very simple “picture”.
Things like the #PocketCrypto or other gadgets that may just need to run some basic #Linux and provide the necessary shims for filesystems, networking and so forth.
Time to fix Wayland's glaring deficiencies. By creating a x11-compat-... protocol namespace that provides a smooth transition path for those #x11#xorg features that #wayland is still lacking after all this time. What do people think?
Can someone help me understand what's wrong with X that #wayland was necessary? Or in what ways does wayland improve on X? Are there noticeable differences from the user's perspective?
A few days ago I dared to move my #FreeBSD desktop from #xorg and #dwm to #Wayland and #hikari. My muscle memory is making the switch a little difficult, but overall I'm quite happy.
Attaching a second monitor while the system is running doesn't work though...
I have seen websites reviewing Wayland over Xorg, and they show screen shots of their respective desktops. Can you tell the difference between Xorg and Wayland by looking at it? #Xorg#wayland#linux
Interesting. Updated my #Bazzite system and noticed that it’s now using #Wayland by default in desktop mode, so this will be my “first” time “main”-ing Wayland.
Haven’t done much on it yet but two immediate things I’ve noticed: The scaling looks pretty awful, and noticeably worse than on #X11/#Xorg. I use this PC on my TV and previously on X I’d scale it up and everything from text and icons look just as sharp as they would on 100%. Doesn’t seem to be the case here on Wayland.
The other thing I noticed was remoting into the desktop was no longer possible using #AnyDesk since they don’t support Wayland for that. I’ve heard a little of this issue in the past, not specific to AnyDesk. Not sure if there’s an alternative app similar to AnyDesk that might support remote desktop for Wayland, or if it’s a Wayland limitation entirely at the moment. All in all, pretty excited honestly to test more of this favourite little toy people love/hate so much.
@graves501 I have been #wayland exclusive on both my laptop and my desktop for a long time, and while it was at times a bit bumpy in the beginning, I have not had any problems for months now, except for maybe some full-screen flickering here and there (which I am not even sure if it is due to Wayland, as it has never bothered me enough to investigate it thoroughly). So, I don't mind if #gnome or #kde drop #xorg, really. 🫣️
Whilst seeing how far I can get with #FreeBSD I have been able to get #SwayWM to run without issue but other #Wayland compositors like #RiverWM and #Hyprland I just cannot get them to start. Oh well I'll leave it for today as that's enough excitement for one day. :freebsd:
@JustineSmithies I never tried #Wayland myself, but I'll add two general remarks: Wayland was developed in a very "#Linux-centric" way and stable #FreeBSD packages of it are still somewhat new. Therefore I would still expect more issues (probably in details) than with classic #x11, using the #Xorg packages. I'm personally using #fvwm3 (maintaining that port myself) and sometimes #KDE#plasma.
Sicherheitslücken im X.Org X-Server und Xwayland erlauben Rechteausweitung
Aktualisierte Fassung des X.Org X-Servers und von Xwayland schließen Sicherheitslücken. Die erlauben die Rechteausweitung oder einen Denial-of-Service.
The 80s want their security issues back!

Questions about stability and Nvidia performance on vanilla Fedora (Gnome) vs KDE
Hi! I have some newb-ish questions, and I was hoping some Fedora veterans could help me out....
