: "Brussels is set to issue new antitrust charges against Microsoft over concerns that the software giant is undermining rivals to its videoconferencing app Teams.

According to three people with knowledge of the move, the European Commission is pressing ahead with a formal charge sheet against the world’s most valuable listed tech company over concerns it is restricting competition in the sector.

Microsoft last month offered concessions as it sought to avoid regulatory action, including extending a plan to unbundle Teams from other software such as Office, not just in Europe but across the world.

However, people familiar with their thinking said EU officials were still concerned that the company did not go far enough to facilitate fairness in the market."

‘Rivals are concerned that will make run more compatibly with its own software over other apps. They also argue that Microsoft has set the pricing of its own products in ways that give little incentive for users to choose other videoconferencing options. Another concern is the lack of data , which makes it difficult for existing Teams users to switch to alternatives.’

We're being force-migrated from Zoom to Teams (to save some Schekels) which was a bit of a wrench at first but I've found a few things which I prefer in Teams:

  • Dedicated "raise hand" vs "react" buttons on the toolbar
  • Visualised sequencing for people who raised their hand so you can go through in order
I do always struggle to find the "mute" button for some reason (seems to be common with lots of people) and the video quality is pretty poor compared to Zoom but I can live with it.

@slink@fosstodon.org avatar

@tdp_org were you also force migrated to the electron app or do you actually use in a browser? for me, using it in does not work because i refuse to accept 3rd party cookies. separate calls in a private window work for some minutes and then get increadibly slow and erratic. so much so that i start to suspect this might even be on purpose, because given that and work flawlessly for hours i see no good reason to not make trams work in ff…

I'm really fed up with MS Teams.

In the past, I've used Matrix/element, and I can't say how many times better it worked. About 1.5 years ago, we decided migrate to MS 365 and I find it a pita.

Does anybody have a clue about the status of Teams<->Matrix integration? I remember, there were numerous attempts to do this using a bridge/puppet, but at least AFAIK that didn't work too well.

What is the status of this? Any insights appreciated 😎

What I love about being remote and/or being on a geographically-distributed team is when someone sets up a (usually) #MSTeams meeting and fails to ensure that the meeting has a dial-in number. It's like, "cool: I can hear the call and I can see the video presentation, but, since my laptop's microphone (and camera) is disabled, I can't actually provide spoken responses to questions directed at me".

ferricoxide,

Two meetings in a row where the call was set up with no dial-in.

Also, why the fuck does #Teams not offer the option to turn off the freaking gallery?? I so don't need to see the other people on the call if they ain't talking. And, if you must show call participants, how about showing only those that enabled sharing from their cameras. It provides zero value and sucks up useful screen realestate showing me participants' initials especially if they aren't talking.

Every time I use Teams, I'm reminded of why Microsoft is able to include it free with their O365 accounts.
