Slowdive has followed in the line of Mission Of Burma, Dinosaur Jr.,& Quicksand, in that their “reunion” records were just as good, if not better, than their previous classic works.
In the case of Slowdive, this was the first in 22 years, & is STELLAR.
The same can be said of their latest album as well, which I also recently posted, & am still taking in.
Both albums make me appreciate the other that much more. #vinyl#vinylrecords#slowdive#shoegaze
I was going to wait until next Wednesday for Music Women Wednesday for this one, but I need to talk about this album right now.
'Precious Dream' by Hot Garbage came out today and I just finished listening to it. It's perfect. More than likely will make my top 20 this year unless 20 other amazing albums somehow surpass it. I doubt they will. Both Juliana and Alex Carlevaris sing, they're siblings. It's like psych, garage, post punk, shoegaze? But there's also some wild bluesy and dark country-ish vibes. It's amazing fuckin SONGWRITING is what it is. This is Hot Garbage's second album, now I gotta check out their first.
mute this thread if you don't like the cosmic sound of dreamy vocals combined with the noise of a metal trashcan being fed into a jet engine
let's kick off with one of the all time greats, 'Guilt' by Ringo Deathstarr, which is the prototype of what I love about #shoegaze- harmony, chaos, rhythm, speed
🤣 I went hunting for a big "map of music genres" and landed on https://everynoise.com -- which, awesome. I know I've seen that site before, but I had forgotten about it.
I type in a band, to see what genre it thinks they are. I went with The Flavor Crystals, a local #Minneapolis band. Everynoise classifies them as Psych-Gaze -- sure, that sounds reasonable.
I click through to psych-gaze to see what bands it puts on their suggested genre playlist... yep, a quick scan reveals a lot of bands I'd mostly agree with.
But then Everynoise has these filters along the top for mainstream, deep, deeper, deepest ... which, I'm sure in some genres would maybe mean something, but given the starting point I'm working with, just makes me laugh.
Discovered this KILLER local Arizona band the other day called Gemm- they kinda remind me of Hum or Catherine Wheel in that kinda 90s/early 2000s heavy, guitarry super melodic rock way. And the dude's voice is great. Are they shoegazey? Maybe. But not super slow. They're really worth a listen.
I've been getting really into the wider lost world of #Shoegaze lately. It's pretty great as work background #music: the beat propels me forward, and the vocals are present but indecipherable under multiple strata of guitar fuzz.
I have the godawful "somebody that I used to know song" in my head. I will probably spray my brain with some #Motown or #Reznor or #shoegaze to remedy the condition but I'm wondering, in a @RickiTarr kind of way, what is your go to song to cleanse your brain of stuff that's gotten stuck there?
#GreatAlbums1980s - #MyBloodyValentine – Isn't Anything (1988). Sounding like nothing in its time, this LP is a jarring mix of swimming melodies, obscured vocals, and effects-laced guitars that twinkle one moment, spew sheets of noise the next. “Cupid Comes” sounds like a power pop band coming unhinged after a sleepless night. “Feed Me with Your Kiss” is a raging wall of fuzz against which Kevin Shields and Bilinda Butcher fight for air. Nineties shoegaze begins here.
#23From2023 - #Slowdive - Everything is Alive (Dead Oceans). Seldom does a band on a second career run match the quality of their work 30 years earlier. I'm not saying this release tops Souvlaki, but Slowdive's deeper plunge into billowy dreampop is a natural progression from 2017's comeback effort. I miss the Cocteau Twins so damn much, and while "Alife" and "Kisses" aren't that, Neil Halstead and company bring a similarly keen melodic factor to their new work.
lowkey obsessed with this alvin and the chipmunks soundcloud project where every track is slowed to 16bpm. it’s dark and drippy and haunting and sorta fkd up—extremely my shit
