Restaurants in America are in crisis because they can't hire and retain qualified workers. To stave off oblivion, restaurateurs are exploring options like replacing tipping with mandatory service fees, reducing waitstaff in favor of counter ordering, and dynamic pricing, where you pay more or less according to demand. Business Insider's food reporter Corey Mintz delves into the issues, concluding: "The fundamental problem is that restaurants have long mistreated their workers. So when many veteran employees had a chance to get out of the industry during the pandemic, they did." Which of these solutions would you be prepared to swallow?
Tipping culture in North America is getting more complex — you're asked to tip in new situations, give a higher percentage, and use new technologies too. @TheConversationUS is sharing this guide to etiquette. What are your feelings on tipping these days?
Okay, trying the marginal Mexican place with the large tantalizing menu again. Hope this batch of stuff is better. Last try there was one great item and a bunch of mediocre things.
Wouldn't usually try so hard to like a place but am hopeful there are a few items they're good at. #restaurants
Ate at a breakfast place this morning that only carried Tabasco; for a brief moment contemplated becoming a guy who brings his own hot sauce to restaurants. Is this how getting old begins? #cooking#breakfast#restaurants#HotSauce#old
Dear #OpenStreetMap, #android, and #vegetarian folks, do you have an app to find vegetarian and #vegan#restaurants?
I used to have OpenMultiMaps that gave me access to OpenVegeMap but the project was discontinued and now I have to use #HappyCow and #VegoResto and I really don't like them...
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: ideally I'd like to discriminate vegan-only/vegan-friendly tags
The thing I like least about the recent wave of inflation is having to now forensically check every cafe/restaurant menu to decide whether I can afford to eat there. Never really had to do that before. But prices are soaring while my freelance income remains much the same.

770 Tonnen Müll entstehen laut Greenpeace täglich durch Speisen und Getränke "to go". Daran konnte bislang auch die seit 2023 geltende Mehrwegpflicht für Produkte zum Mitnehmen nichts ändern. Von Sandra Biegger.

Looking for a San Diego restaurant recommendation to take my octogenarian parents. The primary need is a quiet dining room and goid lighting. Good food and service would be nice, too. #SanDiego#Restaurants

An analysis of federal and state databases sheds new light on the prevalence and scale of wage theft in New York #restaurants and other industries, placing the total wages stolen in one five-year period at more than $203 million.
So it's half price games at Dave & Busters today. I've never been there before but I'm a bit excited. I haven't been to an #arcade style restaurant since my birthday at Chuck E Cheese 15-20 years ago. (Damn I feel old, and I'm just 30 :kek:)
I wonder what kinda overpriced stuff I can get with my tickets...🤔
Splitting the bill has become easier thanks to apps and QR code ordering, but it can still cause friction. Bon Appetit has figured out how to break things down in every scenario, whether you're the only non-drinker, the person with dietary restrictions, or the birthday girl. At a a birthday dinner, what do you usually do?
Dwell's Alice Wolfe is fed up with the prevailing aesthetic of coffee shops: sterile, minimalist, and intentionally less welcoming. She writes with nostalgia about the homey feel of early '90s and 2000s cafes that were built for socializing, open after 6 p.m., and designed to encourage patrons to stay a while.
Do you still like to spend time in cafes? Tell us in the comments what type of places people just... hang out in these days.
I realized today that after working in several restaurants years ago and raising a kid who's now 16, there's NOTHING that can gross me out anymore. I've seen and smelled it all. If you want to desensitize yourself to gross stuff, do one or both of these things.
I know why some restaurants now ask for your credit card when booking a table, but god it's a turn-off. Just got asked for a card for an 8.30am breakfast booking! Decided instead to try our luck on the day.
