Have a look at the @publicspaces conference. I'm biased, but if you're interested in technology & it's impact on our society or work with civic oriented organisations & technology you need to check it out. Have a look at the schedule & the available live streams:
De komende 48u zal ik vooral toots versturen over de @publicspaces conferentie met de hashtag #pubconf2024.
Mocht je dus deze toots niet willen zien dan kun je hier op filteren, maar ik hoop eigenlijk dat je vooral inspiratie krijgt om te helpen met "Taking Back The Internet"!
😎 ZodiPy is a new Python tool for modeling the zodiacal emission seen by an arbitrary Solar System observer, which can be used for removal of both thermal emission and scattered sunlight from interplanetary dust in astrophysical data. One of the main goals with ZodiPy is to make zodiacal emission simulations more accessible by providing the community with a simple Python interface to existing models.
Wondering about popular original open source games awhile ago. Part of the wonder was that despite being more accessible in terms of cost, and sometimes in hardware requirements, it doesn't seem as though you see as much fan art, fiction, or discussion.
Wonder how much of that may relate to many of the more well known open source games being clones or, more simply, fan games in their own right.
Charlie Stross has a quality rant about Microsoft Recall today. I briefly considered whether we could get a Quote of the Week out of this for LWN, but I suspect it would cause the comment section to completely melt down...
He says, "Some commentators are snarking that Microsoft really really wants to make 2025 the year of Linux on the Desktop, and it's kind of hard to refute them right now."
So Microsoft is shipping a new feature in Windows 11 called Recall, which takes screenshots of what the user is doing every few seconds, and then feeds it into OCR.
And I've read a number of people describe it as useless.
But I disagree.
I'm sure plenty of people will find it very handy.
For example, your friendly local law enforcement agents and prosecutors are likely to find a feature like this very useful.
As will the NSA, the other three-letter agencies in the US, and intelligence agencies around the world.
Including the ones in authoritarian states. A couple of back doors, and it will be so much easier keeping track of who's been typing naughty words like "Prigozhin", "Navalny", or "free Hong Kong".
Not in the state surveillance business? No worries!
Assuming this data isn't locked down properly — and we are talking about Microsoft here — it's sure to find plenty of more mundane uses.
Perhaps for bosses who will no longer need to install keyloggers to snoop on their staff.
Or jealous current and former partners.
Mark my words, this poorly-thought-through attempt to shove LLMs in another place they don't belong to temporarily spike Microsoft's share price will find its uses.
And the next computer I get definitely won't be running Windows.
I REALLY loved how many people came up to me whilst I was trading #StoRPer to talk about @FreeCAD I freaking LOVED that people knew my tee logo was out of date, loved the excitement people had around the coming V1. Also properly humbling how many of you thanked me for the FreeCAD book. Ace. #opensource#CAD
