#TodayInOaklandHistory May 9, 1882, Henry J. Kaiser was born. Locally people associate the name with Kaiser Permanente, but Kaiser got his start in construction and made one of his most notable impacts with shipbuilding during WWII. Kaiser was also in aluminum, steel, cement, and even cars.

The namesake Kaiser Center was once the tallest building in #Oakland. It included a penthouse apartment where Kaiser lived for a time. The adjacent parking garage includes a lovely roof garden. The garden is accessible to the public during regular business hours.

Kaiser Center reflected on Lake Merritt. The nearby Ordway Building (which is actually taller, but looks shorter because of the perspective) is next to it.

@diygene The story of the Kaiser shipyards in Richmond is a big part of the Rosie the Riveter Museum, if you ever get a chance to visit. Fascinating history

Richmond grew from 24,000 to 100,000 in like a year. Woman and BIPOC who couldn’t work before started working together … and then when the war ended … and they all lost their jobs

"equal rights, fair employment, affordable housing, around-the-clock childcare, food service, and healthcare” — how about that?
