What is the current state of ?

I ask because the handbook opens by saying it is still an active research project and not production-ready yet. However, it seems to be having many mature components used by other projects and startups.

🛡️ When you are keen on web privacy, i.e. anonymity, what do you use? Is there actually a difference for you between @torproject, @i2p, @Freenet and and is their use important to you? Multiple selection possible.

(please share this survey, thank you :BoostOK:)

iak,

@kubikpixel Never heard of #gnunet before. Can someone share his or her experiences with it?

@thegibson How does #Veilid compare with #gnunet ? They seem fairly similar projects, and I was wondering if concepts from Gnunet were used in Veilid's design.

RFC9498 “The GNU Name System”[^1] has been published, describing one of the fundamental mechanisms behind #GNUnet distributed, content-addressed and censorship resistant storage system.[^2]

I’ve played a bit with GNUnet last year but the pace of its development was so fast that it required too much attention to keep up with network changes, and I gave up. It’s nice to see the RFC which looks like the design has been frozen and will hopefully focus on the implementation stability and usability.

One actual interesting business system built on top of GNUnet is GNU Taler, which is a digital currency system that seems to have the most advantages of cryptocurrencies, while not repeating their sectarian mistakes.^3

Wouldn't it be possible to restore communications in using a mesh network (Bluetooth, WiFi...)? Gaza is very dense, it should technically work, and with devices on the other side of the borders (Israel, Egypt) connected to the internet, it should even be possible to get data out and in from the internet to this local network. Does anyone know if such an app exists? If it doesn't already exist, who would be willing to put together a team to code it?

#Briar if you want just a messaging application (by wifi and or bluetooth) usable by anyone
#GNUNet if you want a complete network layer but hard to set up

@Elizafox (for all its many faults) does support the entire network stack down the lowest layers, all you need at that point is a signalling substrate ( like is cool).

It's not the only we've got.

But I think persistent connectivity instead of would be the wrong thing to focus on.

Setting up our own infrastructure to compete with that of the government and corporations isn't the right approach (or the main one, anyway).

Some short-term history: in 2021 we finally mitigated the pitch black attack that had been found by the #GNUnet folks.

With this the friend-to-friend mode that was introduced in 2007 got robust enough that nowadays people can rely on it for hidden #communication.

In the same release (1492) #decentralized streaming of video on demand started to work well enough to share conference talks: https://freenetproject.org/freenet-build-1492-released-video-diagnostics-pitch-black-plugins.html
