The remains of Carman Hill Fort (probably dating from the iron age some two to three thousand years ago) overlooking the Firth of Clyde from Carman Muir near Renton.

As is typical of iron hill forts, the sites of several other similar hill forts are visible from this location, including Dumbarton Rock, which can be seen in the distance. Incidently, the Dum in Dumbarton comes from dùn, which Gaelic for fort.

Former Grand Central Cinema on Jamaica Street in Glasgow.

This building was originally constructed as a warehouse around 1860. In 1914, the lower three floors were converted into a 750 seat cinema by William B. White. It closed in 1966 and re-opened as the smalller 365 seat Classic Grand in 1973. It finally closed for good as a cinema in 1992.

A ship passing the remains of the Lang Dyke opposite Dumbarton Rock as it heads down the Clyde from Glasgow and out to sea.

This is impressive bit of engineering was built by John Golborne in the 1770s as part of efforts to create a deep water channel all the way up to Glasgow. It still helps keep the channel open to shipping to this day.

Another clay pipe recovered from the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal in the Maryhill area of Glasgow. A few of these are still turning up, and I was really lucky to find this one decorated with a tall ship a couple of evenings ago.

The upper Clyde Estuary at Dumbuck Shoals as seen from the Kilpatirck Hills.

The black line running down the middle of the channel is the Lang Dyke Constructed in the 1770s by John Golborne, this feature was instramental in creating a navigable channel up the Clyde meaning ships could finally sail into Glasgow itself and be unloaded on the Broomielaw rather than twenty miles to the west in Port Glasgow.

The remains of the original Queen Margaret Bridge over the River Kelvin in Glasgow. This cast iron bridge was built in 1870 by John Ewing Walker to provide access between the new neighbourhood of Kelvinside (now referred to as North Kelvinside) which he was developing and the main thoroughfare of Great Western Road on the other side of rhe Kelvin.

This bridge was replaced by the new Queen Margaret Bridge (on what is now Queen Margaret Drive) in the 1920s and much of it was demolished in the 1970s, leaving just the stone piers on which it rested.

Tower Buildings on Possil Road in Glasgow. Built as a warehouse in the 1870s for James Allen who ran the nearby Elmbank Foundry, one of the major iron foundries in Glasgow. Amongst other things, this foundry produced architectural ironwork for the likes of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and J.J. Burnet.

As a result of re-developments in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, this is one of the few pre-1950s buildings left standing in this part of Glasgow

The McIntyre Building on University Avenue in the west end of Glasgow. Designed by J.J. Burnet in the English Collegiate Gothic Style and opened in 1885, this was the original home of the Glasgow University Student Union.

This building is also reputedly the site of the last duel in Scotland in 1899 when two students fought with swords over who should become the next rector.

However, the lurid reports of the duel in a university magazine have been questioned in recent years and despite its place in university folklore, it's now uncertain whether it ever actually took place.

The Titans of Argyle Street.

Standing, heads bowed and arms crossed, this pair of Atlantes have been stoically holding up the building at 146 Argyle Street in Glasgow since 1903, but in all that time they've worked their way into the hearts of many of the city's residents, especially its younger ones.

Renaissance style warehouse built in 1873 and designed by William Spence. This is part of a run of four very different, but all equally impressive, buildings on Argyle Street in Central Glasgow ranging in date from the 1700s to the 1920s.

Seeing such great buildings from very different periods in Glasgow's history all standing shoulder to shoulder is, for me, one of the joys of the city's architecture.

Former Soldiers' Home on Maryhill Road in Glasgow.

Designed by Malcolm Stark and Rowntree, and built opposite the Wyndford Barracks in the 1890s, it served as a respite house for soldiers and their wives. For a small fee, soldiers could rent a quiet room and newly wed ones could spend their honeymoon night there.

This building on Argyle Street in Glasgow has a bit of an interesting history.

Originally built in the 1700s as a tenement, it was remodelled in the 1890s by the architect David Barclay for Mrs Cranston to house luncheon, tea and games rooms as well as a central store for her other properties.

The interior decoration was provided by George Walton with details by Charles Rennie MacKintosh.

Standard measures of lengths set into the ground in George Square outside Glasgow City Chambers. These standards were used to ensure that everyone in the city was using the same measures. This was important both for industrialisation and commerce.

I've been making some replicas of the William Murray Clay Pipes I recovered a few weeks ago from beside the Forth and Clyde Canal in Maryhill. The original pipes were made in the Caledonian Pipe Works on Garngad Hill in the east end of Glasgow between 1832 and 1861.

If you're interested, the first framed set is available for purchase in the Partick Mini Market on Dumbarton Road in the west end. More will be available in the next few weeks.

An initial re-creation of a complete William Murray clay pipe from the Caledonian Pipe Works (1832-1861) in Garngad Hill in Glasgow I've been working based on fragments I recently found alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal in Maryhill.

I've still got some refining to do before it's finished, but as a 'first draft', I'm reasonably pleased with how this project is going so far.

Disused railway tracks at the base of the Finnieston Crane on Stobcross Quay in Glasgow.

These lines were used to bring good made in and around Glasgow down to the banks of the Clyde to be loaded by the crane into ships and exported all over the world. This included items as large as steam locomotives, explaining why such a massive crane was required.

If you've even been in Finnieston area of Glasgow and seen this monkey hanging from a wire on Minerva Street and wondered what it's doing there, the Glasgow Information and Kultural Identity Taskforce (or Glaikit for short) have an explanation for you which they've kindly put on a plaque nearby.

This small, unassuming building at 161 Gallowgate was home to a Quaker Grocer by the name of William Smeal. Smeal was one of the leaders of the anti-slavery movement in Scotland. He helped found the Glasgow Emancipation Society in the 1833. Through the work of Smeal and others, Glasgow became of of the key centres for the fight against slavery worldewide.
