Sometimes I lay awake at night and think about where we would stand as a society today if the Transmeta #Crusoe wouldn't have failed due to too low supply for the sudden rise in demand.
Would intel CPUs be designed the way they are now? Or would intel have found a different way of saving energy? Maybe a #Pentium 4 would have been a really good, innovative design in that world.
Would we have another big player in the desktop and laptop #CPU market with Transmeta? Would #AMD have bought them by now?
Would Apple have considered switching to #Transmeta CPUs if there would have been several improved successors over the years?
Why is it that people seem to only think about worrying and anxiety-inducing topics when they can't fall asleep?
Would #intel have extinguished the new competitor anyway by incorporating the Crusoe's concepts, e.g. into their Pentium M line.
How would the x86-64 architecture differ from what it is?
Would Linus Torvalds have had the same amount of time available for work on Linux? Would he have delegated decisions more or earlier and if so, which decisions in the kernel development would have been made differently?
It's kinda mesmerizing watching the core speeds on one of the i7-12700Ts in the #Proxmox Cluster (the one that runs Tiggi.es presently) dynamically shift cores anywhere from 1400Mhz to 4.62GHz quickly, and on an as-needed basis. The low base speed saves energy, but it'll instantly pop cores up to speeds within its thermal/power limit envelope, so for lightly-threaded workloads, it can perform as well as beefier chips. #homelab#servers#cpu
I thought about adding another E5-1660 v2 like my other T3610, but suddenly they have gone up in price and at almost the cost of an AMD Ryzen, by comparison. It would be silly to pay that much for a small 0.1 Ghz boost gain.
I also considered a E5-2673 v2, but I cannot find anyone who used it with a Dell T3610 and so I am uncertain about the compatibility. 🤔
It might just be that I'm more proficient analyzing and working around #GPU quirks (happens, when you do mostly #GPGPU for more than a decade) than #CPU, but there's so many weird things happening on this machine that I don't know where to start from.
Oh god, the Intel N100 and N-series CPUs are game changers! You get Skylake like performance (i5-6600 to i7-6700) for CHEAP at 6W, and all that with AVX2! And with i3-N300 you get 8 cores! One thing it's missing for me is a TB3/USB4 controller.
Also, can confirm that the it weirdly performs on par with the E-cores in my i7-13900K! I wanted to test if my game would work fine on N100 before getting one, so I ran my game on the E-cores and it worked!
Continuing our #EverythingOpen schedule highlights, we present PJ Waskiewicz, who will talk all about #CXL - Compute Express Link - an #open#standard for high-speed #CPU communication with devices and #RAM.
PJ's talk will dig into why this is such an improvement, and give an overview of CXL internals.
The #CPU that runs some #USB-C wall chargers has more than twice the RAM, and is 563x faster than the #computer that ran the guidance system in #Apollo 11.
To those "my cellphone has more computing power than Apollo 11" guys...
I'm writing a new big book on software performance and scalability
If you'd like to see early chapter drafts from it, and potentially give me a little feedback (or answer a few simple questions I ask of you, about your impressions), in private? please let me know
