In Ontario, "public spending was still restrained by a frugal government more interested in highway building than higher learning." While one would be forgiven for imagining this is a description of the current provincial government, it actually applies to the province's priorities in the postwar period.

Many #ContractFaculty can't put down roots on campus because their jobs are unstable. OCUFA calls for an 11.75% increase in funding investment in our universities over the next 5 years to create good jobs, strong campuses, and strong communities. #TogetherWeCan #OnPSE #CdnPSE #Fairness4CF ocufa.on.ca/fairness

From my perspective as a former international student and current university professor, taxes are the answer to the problem (and to so many others). Governments across Canada have abdicated their responsibility to support post-secondary education in favour of the quick fix of international student fees. This is not only morally dubious, it is also financially unsustainable. The provinces need to support their key institutions.

This MONDAY!

On January 15th, I'll be taking part alongside several other scholars in a symposium organized by Wilfrid Laurier University on legacies of racism and colonialism in Canadian universities. My talk will focus on the use in 1860 of funds held in trust for First Nations to bail out McGill College.

Institutional Histories: Reckoning with the Past - Reimagining the Future (9am-2:30pm, EST, online)

"York University’s low enrolment and reliance on international students putting school at risk: auditor general"

The issues identified by the auditor general are not unique to York. Flat provincial funding, reliance on international student tuition, and growth in senior admin is fairly typical across the province as it is elsewhere in Canada.

Here I am, working to maintain the librarians' and archivists' reputation as the most militant bargaining unit on campus #uwofa #cdnpse #onpse #Labour

Negotiations at Western are not going well. The association has asked the conciliator to file a "no-board report". Seventeen days after this report is filed (and assuming that a strike vote has been held), the librarians at UWO will be in a legal strike position.

my employer continues to radicalize me. They won't pay us more, or hire to replace vacancies created by attrition, or to expand the number of librarians in keeping with the growth of the undergraduate enrolment, but they WILL increase our benefits for therapy!
