The nearly 25 km Pajares Base Tunnel is the seventh longest in Europe. It forms part of the almost 50 km Pajares Bypass between Pola de Lena and La Robla.
Today in Labor History October 6, 1934: The Catalan republic was declared following the workers' uprising in Asturias, and other worker uprisings taking place throughout Spain. Workers were trying to overthrow the right-wing regime. In Asturias, they murdered a large number of police and religious leaders with dynamite and machine guns and took control of the region. In Catalan, they declared an antifascist state. By 1936, Catalonia was fully under the control of the workers, led predominantly by the anarchosyndicalist union, CNT, and the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI).
Today in Labor History October 5, 1934: 40,000 miners and iron workers went on strike against the right-wing government of Spain. The strike turned into a revolutionary uprising, with workers seizing towns throughout Asturias, killing large numbers of cops and religious leaders. They declared a Proletarian Republic and instituted their own government in the occupied territories. This uprising is considered one of the early events of the Spanish Civil War. It was followed by intense repression by the federal government, during which thousands of miners were executed, thousands more were tortured and 30-40,000 were imprisoned.

En la costa y valles abrigados del oriente de #Asturias es frecuente encontrar #encinares (Quercus ilex L.). También en la proximidad de las aldeas, sobre roquedos calizos de escasísimo suelo, inútil para el cultivo, se ven rodales como éste próximo a #Collera#Ribadesella
donde la encina relicta se combina con laureles, madroños y una flora peculiar.
