I’ve embarked on a holiday COVID isolation journey to run the original Altair BASIC written in 1975.

First stop: punching the 4K tape.

More iterations! So slow! I’m beginning to doubt those floating point math routines that Mr. Davidoff wrote. #BASIC #tty #Mandelbrot #ASCII

So I think got my #AppleLisaClone online as well! It's currently running SubText #BBS on MacWorks/ System 6.0.8 with 2MB of memory over a PPP connection!

Ok so it worked for about 30 minutes, the BBS was packed, all nodes busy! There was a multi user chat!

Then it just stopped responding. Oh well! I'll try again soon. =)

I have a stupid idea, but I'm not quite sure how to make it happen. Modern linux systems seem to be eschewing virtual consoles, but assuming that you wanted to keep using them and also had to meet a requirement to display a classification banner on-screen at all times, where would be the best place to try to insert a banner, agetty?

Five years ago, almost to the day, I made the first of several big jumps repairing an Olivetti Te-318 teleprinter. (It's also been 1 year since joining Mastodon, where my fun has doubled! inversely to some other sites...) #tty #olivetti #repair

Wow, @linux does actually improve efficiency over time...

I just compiled a minimal kernel 6.5 for OS/1337 targeting instead of and the resulting binary is even 10kB smaller than the one for 6.4.12...

For real: That's awesome cuz it allows me to make the version for a reality and still have & as client in it...

Cudos to @torvalds and the maintainers for that:
They really did cleanup the codebase and made it |ler!

Would be nice if TUI applications showed what they look like
I'm not installing something without seeing a screenshot of it

Another problem is accessibility, I can't imagine how many TUI applications are invisible to vision-impaired users, does ncurses even have a solution for this?

TTYs are super cool, but do we do we still need to encode all information as a matrix of characters?

kkarhan,

@natty true, true...

Whilst are the easiest to do, I do wish most applications would at the very least support output and at least he somewhat useable on a braille screen and/or with TTS.

is making a priority and do proper by and people!

Tired: Morse code was the first digital mode
Wired: Morse code was the first variable length encoding

kkarhan, (edited )

@vk6flab @jupiter so yeah it's the "first lossless static compression" for "streaming data" (or rather text), but that doesn't mean it's efficient.

It's advantage is that it's static and can encode and decode messages without a specified header, which is why it was used in pre-#TTY telegraphy systems.

Modern data compression will be more efficient but only once your message exceeds thousands of characters and thus can compensate the header dara needed.

Finally gotten round to changing the default #TTY font size so I no longer have to squint when dropping into one. 😂
