Yemen lays bare the cracks in the empire's facade. The West's reaction to stop a months-long relentless war, apartheid, and an alarming death toll nearing 25,000? Next to nothing. But Yemen disrupting the flow of global capital? Unforgivable.
Personally I think using force as a last resort to keep trading and sea routes open is reasonable, especially as the Houthis have been warned multiple times and even about where the missiles would fall if I understood it correctly, also Biden was far from "trigger happy". The scenario of just defending the civilian ships against attacks all the time wasn't sustainable (and quite expensive I think) #redsea#yemen#houthis#geopolitics@geopolitics
A good summary of the implications of the Houthi Red Sea attacks on shipping in direct retaliation to Israel’s war in Gaza. It explains the threat of escalation and the chaos it will mean to supply chains. However, nowhere does the article propose a simple solution: for the world to apply meaningful pressure on Israel to stop its genocidal war, as is the Houthi stated aim. #Houthi#Israel#Gaza#RedSea#Shipping#Genocide
"Heavy #US and #UK air strikes pounded targets in rebel-held #Yemen early on Friday after weeks of disruptive attacks on #RedSea shipping by #Iran -backed #Houthi forces....'Our country was subjected to a massive aggressive attack...' Hourhi Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Al-Ezzi said...'America and Britain will have to prepare to pay a heavy price and bear all the dire consequences of this blatant aggression,' he added"
Since Oct. 17, 2023, Iranian-backed Houthi militants have attempted to attack and harass 27 ships in international shipping lanes. These illegal incidents include attacks that have employed anti-ship ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. These strikes have no association with and are separate from Operation Prosperity Guardian, a defensive coalition of over 20 countries operating in the #RedSea Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden. “We hold the Houthi militants and their destabilizing Iranian sponsors responsible for the illegal, indiscriminate, and reckless attacks on international shipping that have impacted 55 nations so far, including endangering the lives of hundreds of mariners, including the United States,” USCENTCOM Commander. “Their illegal and dangerous actions will not be tolerated, and they will be held accountable.”
UK, US, Australia, the Netherlands, Bahrain, and Canada, conducted joint strikes tonight against Houthi targets in Yemen. Saudi Arabia helped hit Iranian/Houthis targets. Don't sleep on it.
CENTCOM's Joint & Combined Air Component Command, executed deliberate strikes on over 60 targets at 16 Iranian-backed Houthi militant locations, including command and control nodes, munitions depots, launching systems, production facilities, and air defense radar systems.
Over 100 precision-guided munitions of various types were used in the strikes. These strikes were comprised of coalition air and maritime strike and support assets from across the region, including U.S. Naval Forces Central Command aircraft and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles launched from surface and sub- surface platforms.
"On Dec 26, Israel's first conscientious objector since the start of its war against Hamas, Tal Mitnick, was sent to prison after refusing to serve in the army. Mitnick, however, is not alone. A small group of Israelis are refusing [are] refusing to serve in [the] conflict. "
#CAIRO — After a long journey from #Gaza, more than 100 American citizens and their families have entered #Egypt through the #RafahCrossing. Jonathan Webster, the #USEmbassy in Cairo's consul general, said some of those families are telling him they ran out of food and water during their journeys. #Israel
Initial reports suggested that as many as a dozen sites in #Yemen had been targeted, aimed at military targets, using fighter jets and ship-launched Tomahawk #CruiseMissiles, suggesting a broad assault intended to quickly deter the #Houthis.
The #Houthis are an armed group from a sub-sect of #Yemen's #Shia Muslim minority, the #Zaidis. They take their name from the movement's founder, Hussein al Houthi.
Formally known as the Ansar Allah (Partisans of God), the group was formed in the 1990s to combat what they saw as the corruption of the then president, #AliAbdullahSaleh. #Iran#Israel
