madcodger,

@bh Do we have any sort of ranked choice voting in the works yet?

@bh @madcodger meanwhile, an actual "your vote is always counted" method is on the ballot in Eugene, and this fall Portland is going to learn the hard way that they've been duped by fairvote's backdoor lobbying and misinformation when the vote splitting still happens because there are 15 candidates running on the same platform for 3 seats. SF and NYC mayor results would seem to have demonstrated that, or that RCV has been promising to fix it since Nader -- they're just stalling. starvoting.org

"This is a classic example of a problem that could be solved by ranked-choice voting, a tested, nonpartisan reform that discourages this sort of gamesmanship and more accurately represents what a majority of voters want."

Ranked choice is 'the hot reform' in democracy. Here's what you should know about it

@peterdrake And abolish the Senate while we’re at it!

My concern is the converse, actually. I’m afraid when people see how weirdly RCV can behave, they’ll paint all voting reform with that brush. No one wants to be Charlie missing the football again. I could go on about all of RCV’s shortcomings compared to many other voting methods, but I should probably just write a paper or blog about it. This one does a good job summarizing some of the key points, though:

@BreadAndSalt What's your favorite system?

#AskFedi does anyone know if there's an FEP for running ranked choice polls over the fediverse?

@strypey I love the idea. I'm not sure how well it would work with federation, but that is more ignorance than concrete suspicion it couldn't work.

I can't see why it would be much harder than the single choice polls Mastodon already has.

Too bad the commission went with their feelings about how works, rather than listening to their voting methods research committee, who had done the homework and recommended . Now we've got the business association's pet conservative electeds proposing to make 3 proportional seats per district into 2 single-winner elections, where RCV/IRV will deliver status quo results and money-talks manufactured consent, like it has for 100 years.🙄

STV , while not terrible, is not as representational of group consensus as proportional star voting, but the single-winner version (recently branded RCV or IRV) does not give good representative results.
