We’re still on a break from posting spotlights on albums from our 1001 Other Albums list, but I’m stressed and sad, and therefore I need a little list-making therapy. And so, in honor of the late great Steve Albini who suddenly left us this week, here is a (possibly incomplete) list of the albums from The List that he had a part in, in one way or another:
I think those make a nice little tribute playlist to keep us going for a bit. And, if you want to look up more, here is a (likely very incomplete) list of other bands/artists on The List that Albini worked with, on albums of theirs not on The List: Ben Frost, Cheap Trick, Don Caballero, Esben and the Witch, Fugazi, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Gogol Bordello, Jim O’Rourke, Jimmy Page, Joanna Newsom, Low, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai, Nine Inch Nails, Pussy Galore, Richard Youngs, Robert Plant, Songs: Ohia, The Ex, The Stooges, and Yonatan Gat.
Feel free to share your favorite Albini-ed album below (and, if it’s not already in The List, let me know if you want me to add it).
RIP Steve Albini. So many of my favourite albums were recorded by him, and so in a way he shaped so much of what I've loved. At 61, he has left us far too soon, but his mark on our culture is indelible and undeniable, and in that sense he will live on forever.
I love this newly-released Pixies live collection. Includes covers of songs by Beach Boys and The Beatles.
Listening to this album, I'm taken back by how great they were. The songs are wonderful in different ways, but the band...they were really the sum of their parts and every part stood out. The songwriting was fantastic. The song and playing...wow. I still remember discovering Pixies after I discovered The Smiths; felt like my brain had been bathed in acid.
On my new years eve hike I found floating islands in the sea.
Looks like we're getting faefolk for 2024, for better or worse, if I was a betting man my money would be on worse... 😂
After I miserably failed to provide a song last week, I will this week throw in 2 for @Kitty 's #TuneTuesday @sharazluke came up with a clever prompt: #SayMyName - A song with a name that's not featured in the lyrics.
#Pixies "Planet of Sound" (1991). I wore out two cassette copies of TROMPE LE MONDE in San Francisco in '91. It was one of the tapes I took into the darkroom overnight at the SFAI.
#Fairies were not evil. However, they were amoral, not tied to the moral and ethical demands of humanity. They were merely playful troublemakers rather than devilish opponents. They commonly tried to lead travelers astray. This was a minor inconvenience and could be quite frightening, but even without protection, the #fairy eventually grew bored with the trick and released the ensnared human. More seriously, the fairies attempted to lure useful or attractive people into the #Otherworld, to do their bidding until released.

#FairyFriday: #Pixies enjoyed leading people astray. Several antidotes to being pixy-led have been recorded: carrying iron, wearing clothing backward or inside out, wearing hobnailed boots, carrying salt in the pocket, whistling or singing while walking. Although none offered a guarantee, such actions offered some protection against fairy mischief.
