Seller of 2004 Sony Laptop said he hadn’t tested the sound that it was probably just missing the driver. I think it’s a bit worse than that 😅 Well it was 40$. Audio out works though so I can just route the sound back to my speakers via the Mac.
Sometimes I lay awake at night and think about where we would stand as a society today if the Transmeta #Crusoe wouldn't have failed due to too low supply for the sudden rise in demand.
Would intel CPUs be designed the way they are now? Or would intel have found a different way of saving energy? Maybe a #Pentium 4 would have been a really good, innovative design in that world.
Would we have another big player in the desktop and laptop #CPU market with Transmeta? Would #AMD have bought them by now?
Would Apple have considered switching to #Transmeta CPUs if there would have been several improved successors over the years?
Why is it that people seem to only think about worrying and anxiety-inducing topics when they can't fall asleep?
Would #intel have extinguished the new competitor anyway by incorporating the Crusoe's concepts, e.g. into their Pentium M line.
How would the x86-64 architecture differ from what it is?
Would Linus Torvalds have had the same amount of time available for work on Linux? Would he have delegated decisions more or earlier and if so, which decisions in the kernel development would have been made differently?
This would be my first processor in a computer I'd assemble myself. It's my all time favorite and most nostalgic CPU. I'll always adore the Slot 1 design and the, at the time, simplicity of installation.
Intel would go on to launch their most aggressive ad campaign to date featuring the now famous "bunny suit" dancers.
I built a PC/XT #clone (8086, #DOS 3.2) in 1987. Before I saw Windows 3 run. "DOS For Dummies" had not yet spawned a franchise. Amber monitor.
I built a #Pentium II box in 1998. Ran #WindowsNT? and I got #Debian to.boot on it. I was still innocent of a "GPU"—I didn't even bother with a sound card. Ran #Emacs under Windows!
Have not touched hardware since then. GOLLY THINGS SURE HAVE CHANGED
I hereby decree 2024 is the year of the Intel 486 CPU. Get out those old machines and bring them to life.

Trolling through some boxes & crates of old motherboards that has been piling, this was on top. I do believe this will make a fun little build in the coming months, plus this was from one of my personal systems in the late 90s. #Retrocomputing#Pentium
Following my Debian Bookworm installation a few days ago on an old HP Slimline PC, I realised that the #Intel#Pentium#E6500 CPU actually supports 64-bit! The copy of Windows 7 was 32-bit and I didn't check before installing the i386 version of #debian12... I'm gonna buy two 2GB DDR3 ram so I meet the requirements of 4GB to install #Docker...
#retrocomputing#pc#pentium
