There are multiple copies of #Orwell’s classic novel Nineteen Eighty-Four; the story in which Big Brother is always watching and the state has established near-total control over body and mind.

“The situation now in #Russia is similar to Nineteen Eighty-Four,” librarian Alexandra Karaseva tells me. “Total control by the government, the state and the security structures.”

#BBC's Steve Rosenberg on the #GeorgeOrwell library in Russia. Its founder has fled #Russia. The 68 year old #librarian says “We helped destroy the #SovietUnion but failed to build #democracy. We didn’t have the experience to know when to stand firm and say ‘You mustn’t do this.’ Perhaps if my generation had read Ninety Eighty-Four, it would have acted differently.”

#verkiezingen #politiek https://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2024/04/28/verkiezingsmeeting-n-va-speech-bart-de-wever/

Pretend? really?
Reminds me of a book I've read about bookstores' fun moments, and one was about a customer who wanted to buy books just to put at his house and makes him looks so smart. LOL
But, I've read , Jackson, , and more !

#1984 #orwell

I just finished reading this amazing book, ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death’ by Neil Postman that compares both Orwell’s 1984 with Huxley’s Brave New World. His conclusion from the beginning was that Huxley was correct in his prediction of the future and that television is the driving force to make people to be more and more uneducated. This short book was written in 1985 and yet, still stands the test of time. @bookstodon

People need to stop calling pro- for ‘pro-’. It’s as bizzare as using the term ‘the global south’ and tying it to pro-. Democracies or dictatorships are not tied to a geographical location. The term western is an invented term to group mostly democracies into some kind of enemy in the fashion of ’s 1984.
