Installed Nixos on my old 2011 MacBook Air that was running Ubuntu. I was using Ubuntu because the WiFi drivers worked oob. Nixos had no problems and works perfectly. I shall name it nixbook air. Gnome always looks great on Mac hardware 🤣

#NixOS 24.05 has just been tagged.

https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/releases/tag/24.05

The release process is still ongoing.

Can someone please help me debug on 🙏

I think it has worked at some point, but, to be honest, I am not sure as I usually just use sleep.
I would now like to set up hybrid sleep, but for that I first need to get hibernation working once and for all

Current state is that it neither works on my work machine (a Dell Latitude 7440), nor on my private notebook (a Lenovo Thinkpad T470).

Current status: I‘m making progress very slowly. The server is assembled and up and running Proxmox 8. Yesterday I‘ve build a custom NixOS installiert that has my SSH key pre-loaded. That way I can boot a VM and set it up using nix-anywhere. Tonight I‘m planning to try this out the first time.

OK so I finally gave NixOS a shot and oh gosh it's a game changer. The thing NixOS solves is everything I hate about linux that I apparently mistakenly believed was "just how linux works".

I honestly did not know it was possible for a linux system to not suck as much as NixOS doesn't suck.

If you're already familiar with Linux, then is great, and all you need is a good degree in computer science to be able to write the configuration files. If you have one of those, you can learn it in about six months. If you haven't? Well, then it'll be about three years and six months.

Yes, and don't get me wrong, I very much appreciate #nixos and am using it on two of my home servers, and using nix to manage packages on my Macs. I do think there's something in the suggestion that it's easier if you don't have to un-learn a lot of stuff first! And, while I do have a couple of CS degrees to help me, I must confess my functional programming is rusty, not having had a use for it since my undergrad exams until now :-)

Note to myself and to everyone using #systemd:

Never set "RestartSec" without also changing "StartLimitIntervalSec".

The later defaults to 10s so if your "RestartSec" is to high your unit may run into an infinite restart loop.

I wonder if I can implement an assert in my #nixos config which checks this.

I want to congratulate the #nixos documentation team on breaking all the documentation links. Good job!

Anyone runs something similar? Feels like I finally found a perfect sweet spot between productivity and freedom.

Is it a hostile takeover at #NixOS? The actions of the leadership muting people who don't agree with their actions is documented here. https://discourse.nixos.org/t/why-was-jon-ringer-banned-from-github/44114

Hi #nixos friends. I made a wrapper for plop.js. It's a way to quickly generate files from templates.

https://gitlab.com/cbleslie/nix-plop/-/tree/main

Plop.js is awesome. I wanted it on non-node projects. But I'd need to list node, package.json, package.lock and have node_modules themselves in the project folder, right? Not any more.

Now it's a development shell dependency. Keeping Node itself outside of the project. Just the plopfile, and the templates need to be present.

More on Plop: https://plopjs.com/

And since using #jj made me modify my shell prompt I switched from #p10k to #starship https://starship.rs

Really, nice. And easy to get started with on #nixos You can see my config here:

Got my first development environment (Jekyll website) running in NixOS on my Framework laptop using devenv. That makes this my first successful dev environment in nix. :) Nice work @domenkozar!

The 24.05 update is going pretty well. All VMs are updated and just two physical hosts are missing.

The hairy part is fixing nox for mpv https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/314433 and gst https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/314428 which didn't get noticed over the last months.

Just wanted to remark, that this is the first time, that no one needed to remind me to add the stable release branch to the bot.

That bot, if you wonder: https://chaos.social/@maralorn/109325481672585146

Something extremly awesome happened. After switching to -24.05 my system just feels … more snappy?

I don’t know exactly why. I think it might be the update to 0.3.0.

Any Idea why I'm unable to update #NixOS due to "No space left on device" even if there are 23G available?

Edit: The issue was caused by number of inodes.

danielsiepmann,

@Pol I had another look today. I still use channels and it looks like every channel is added as root and not garbage collected via my usual commands.

Any idea where I can find further info on how to delete no longer used channels as roots? That should solve all issues I guess.

The issue only seems to exist for the #NixOS, not home-manager.
git.daniel-siepmann.de/daniels… is my current script to update and clean things up.
