I hardly ever use them and I mostly don't much like them as a reader. They usually feel clunky and forced to me. I have a vague reference in Book 4 of my series (in draft) but that's as far as it goes.

Assuming the prohibition on split infinitives is already dead (thank you, Captain Kirk), then I would choose the rule that says you shouldn't start a sentence with 'and' or 'but'.
