I'm trying to install #Proton Bridge on a fresh #Kubuntu install, and keep running into this problem. Any hints out there?
EDIT 1: my package manager can't find 'libsecret' or 'secret-service'. Installing 'pass' does nothing. And kwallet isn't supported, which is ridiculous.
EDIT 2: Apparently installing gnome-keyring solves this. @protonmail: Bridge still needs serious work on #Linux...)
Does anyone have a good resource to do some research on which #linux#distro I should try next? I've been using #ubuntu / #kubuntu for over 10 years now (daily driving for the most recent year) and i've finally had it with #snap. I'm intrested in other #debian based distros, as well as #fedora and #arch, but I'd like a good overview of the major differences.
I picked up a lightly used ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 with an Intel i5-1245U, 16 GB of (soldered) RAM and a 256 GB NVMe SSD for around $520. It doesn't have a discrete GPU, but it's better that way.
The laptop only had a couple of minor scratches and the screen and power adapter was a little dusty.
I added a 32 GB memory module and replaced the SSD with a WD 2 TB SN850X for another $215. For around half the price of a similarly configured built of the laptop when new, I'm pretty happy with the setup.
It won't be my primary laptop, but it's thin and light enough to be one that I can take with me while on the go. I loaded Kubuntu 23.10 and using Wayland without issues.
The only thing I don't like is how tiny the F1-F12 keys are, the long power up time (from power on to the GRUB boot menu), and how warm the thing gets at idle compared to my M1 Max MBP.
It wasn't as straightforward as I hoped, but after some trial and error I finally managed to dual boot on my main machine. So now Kubuntu will take the main stage and Windows will be there for compatibility reasons. Curious to see what Windows soundware I can manage to make usable in Linux 🤔
Frustrated in that I can't seem to get #OpenBSD to boot on my Thinkpad X1 Carbon (7th gen). It installs fine, but it seems no amount of bios fiddling will allow it to boot after install (with or without FDE).
I did buy the X1 7th gen because of @jcs's instructions at https://jcs.org/2019/08/14/x1c7 - and followed them, just get nothing, no matter what I try to boot to or what options in the bios I change.
FreeBSD boots and #Kubuntu boots. :\ Back to Kubuntu again for a while. Wasted time is sometimes just wasted time.
DNS seems fucky on my laptop, but not for anything else in the house. Kubuntu is haunted (this started after upgrading to 23.10), but I don't have time to switch distros...
Symptoms: Lookups timing out, new connections take too long to start.
Sitting at my sister's home, I can use the WLAN easily. Lappy connects to it automatically.
But I have LAN (yes, a physical cable) in my guest room that would give me better speed. I plug it into the laptop - and it will not connect. I even gave LAN priority in the settings.
I cannot find a setting to tell it to use the darn ethernet cable. Where do I look?
#foss people out there, what #linux distro do you use and why? Please note, this is not a distro bashing conversation. Rather, it's curiosity about other opinions and learning.
I've used #ubuntu#kubuntu or #kdeneon as daily driver for the past 14 years. Whilst I like neon, it doesn't play very nicely with Nvidia. Yes, I'm fully aware you can get it to work, but it's a pain in the ass and regularly breaks shortly after getting things somewhat working. At least that's my experience.
About ten years ago, I had a brief flirtation with #opensuse and the relationship ended badly. I still have a little trauma from that. I'm pretty sure it was all my fault, but never could figure out what I did wrong.
I've been very unimpressed with the direction that Canonical is taking and wanted to try something new. I tried an Arch based distro last autumn and really found the community too caustic to new people joining. Not to mention, I saw a lot fascist views inserted into comments and replies to other users. That was dropped quickly.
After New Year's, I decided to get crazy and installed #fedora. 😅 I know, I know, not really a big leap into the unknown, but I've never tried it before. I've been using it for almost 6 months now and it's ok. I don't like it and I don't dislike it. My biggest issue is that Xorg seems broken (and I cannot figure out why) and I can only use Wayland to login. Wayland is just not quite there for my workflow.
Oh, I should also mention. I'm one of those #kdeplasma nut cases.
Got a new used laptop and I'm about to free it from Windows.
Was thinking hard about which #linux distro to use this time (last was #manjaro and #kubuntu#ubuntu before that).
I like to try out "new" ones.
And now... well... why shouldn't I? Why not go back to where I once started.
After seeing @lemba reply about #LinuxMint I’ve decided to fire it up in a VM and take it for a spin. I’m a #Kubuntu guy but I can see the reason why Mint might be a good start for someone who has been trapped in #Windows for so long. What other #Linux OSes would you recommend for a lifelong #Windows user who might be willing to switch?
I feel like I was literally just saying how I don't have any problems with my nVidia GPU on Kubuntu; this morning, FFXIV won't run on the GPU. I feel like I brought this on myself.
Bravo a notre client qui a rafraîchi son vénérable ordinateur Intel i3-2100 de 2012 ! 😀
Pour moins de 150 € , passage a 12 Go de Ram et 500 Go de SSD 👍

Still really enjoying #kubuntu. But the one thing I haven’t had much joy with is the screenshot tool. It seems to capture the wrong area of the screen when I have multiple monitors. Plus it requires multiple clicks. Are there any recommendations for tools other than the one bundled in to #kde?
